Basic English Group meeting 5.8.

Today the DOUNB Library had new-comers again that got interested in the opportunity to study English in the library format.
The Window on America center offers the library patrons an “Express English” activity that will help adult students to learn the basics of the English language.
Ten two- hour lectures are offered for the patrons who studied other foreign languages, but now need to speak English.
The professional EFL lecturer T. Gavryliuk combines the phonetic, reading and lexical exercises with important cross-cultural information that will help the English learners to use the Basic English in communication with foreigners in Ukraine and abroad.
The new patrons were informed about the DOUNB’s resources and modern services.

American Art becomes Closer with Voice of America

Voice of America project for Window on America centers.
A big group of Dnipro "Window on America" patrons watched a film about the American art. Art is the driving force of social processes; it helps to combat negative phenomena and to draw attention to global social problems.
The highlight of the film was a virtual tour of the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Visiting this world known museum online was a wonderful option for people who live on another continent!

Tropic Thunder

Tonight we, the Wednesday Movie Club members (Dnipro Window on America center, Ukraine) offered the big screening of the film Tropic Thunder.  It’s a 2008 American satirical action comedy film co-written, produced, directed by, and starring Ben Stiller. The film also stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black. The main plot revolves around a group of prima donna actors who are making a fictional Vietnam War film. When their frustrated director decides to drop them in the middle of a jungle, they are forced to rely on their acting skills in order to survive the real action and danger.The film received generally positive reviews, with critics praising the film's characters, story, faux trailers and it had an extensive marketing promotion.
WOA’s patrons enjoyed the film and the discussion that followed.

My favorite book is ...


Activate English Group 5.7.: «My favorite book is ...»
The DOUNB Library and the Window on America Dnipro center offer the library patrons an “Express English” activity that will help them to activate their passive knowledge of the foreign language and to overcome the fear of speaking in English.
This afternoon the Activate English lesson was attended by the American volunteer Edison and his friends Yevgen. The students had a chance to practice their conversational phrases and ask the American guest different questions. We had a good laugh explaining to Edison some local superstitions – not to do anything across the porch, not to sit at the corner of the table, and some others. Edison told the group what he considers good souvenirs from Ukraine.
The second part of the session was dedicated to the thanking phrases; the home task is to prepare conversation about “WORK”.

Talent Show at American Church

The Window on America center staff and patrons were invited to participate in the event organized by the American church in Dnipro.
The Talent Show took place in the new beautiful building of the church in Dnipro’s down town. Several WOA’s patrons were selected to participate in the Talent show with their musical numbers – 2 songs (Nataly and Dmytro) and 2 piano instrumental performances (Valentyna and Iryna), the rest of the WOA patrons were supporting them with rounds of applause.
 

The WOA’s patrons are fascinated with the American volunteers and appreciate their pleasant personalities, manners and ideas, eagerness to study local traditions and language and share their own ones.
A visit to the American church impressed all the participants.

The path to Success: Not just a Destination

Lecture: «The path to Success: Not just a Destination» for the Gabfest Club’s members (Dnipro Window on America center, Ukraine).
This afternoon WOA was visited by Mr. Paul Sullivan, The Director of American volunteers from the American Church of Jesus Christ in Eastern Ukraine. Members of the WOA’s GABFEST English club every Saturday come to learn something new and helpful about the USA. This weekend they had a pleasant surprise – the library was visited by a group of US volunteers in Ukraine Mr. Paul Sullivan, gave a lecture on importance of leadership for achieving success.


The lecture "Path to success - not just a destination” was emotional and exciting. 1.5 hours passed like a flash. In the past, Mr. Sullivan was an engineer-geologist, has held key managing positions in the world famous company "Shell Group". While at “Shell”, he held a number of positions in strategy development and execution, as well as deep water exploration and development. He has served on several boards in the industry focusing on energy technology, including renewable technologies like solar, wind and hydrogen. At the end of the meeting the speaker willingly answered WOA’s Club members’ questions.

Sustained Interest in Basic English

This afternoon the session of the Basic English Group 5.7. took place at the DOUNB Library in Window on America Dnipropetrovsk (Ukraine).
The Group was founded as a training site for people who never studied English or for those who need to return to the basics of the language. The patrons were informed about the WOA’s resources and modern online services.
The professional EFL lecturer T. Gavryliuk combines the phonetic, reading and lexical exercises with important cross-cultural information that will help the English learners to use the Basic English in communication with foreigners in Ukraine and abroad.
All the participants found the session educational and helpful.

Introduction to the library and the USA!

Observing the 25th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Ukraine and the US "Window on America" Information Resource Center continues partnership with educational establishments of the city.
This afternoon the Center was visited by the group of the 5th years students from school №141 to meet the biggest regional Library - DOUNB.
The Head of the WOA Center, Svetlana Usenko, explained to the group the main objective of the library center – to provide relevant information about the United States and help to learn English.
The students watched informative slide-show "Meet the United States of America." The children learned many fun facts about the US geography and history, the US symbols (the national flag and coat of arms), prominent personalities of the USA, its largest cities.


The students were impressed with the images of the capital city architectural attractions. Educational YouTube video about Washington highlighted the spring attraction of Washington - the National Mall and the pale pink blossom of Japanese cherries.

Presenting your Home Country and Town

What would you tell Americans about Ukraine and your hometown?
Window on America Dnipro (Ukraine) continues its partnership with the local secondary school № 23.
The 5th year students and their teachers attended the WOA’s presentation about cross-cultural communication:  how to present our home country Ukraine and our home town Dnipro.
The bright and smart kids answered quiz-like questions, demonstrated creative thinking and local history knowledge.
 The group was offered new vocabulary to describe Ukrainian traditions and Dnipro’s tourist attractions.
Now they are ready to present Ukraine to the world community!

Gangster Squad at DniproWOA

For enjoy and to inspire to improve English the members of the Wednesday Movie club (Dnipro Window on America center, Ukraine) had watched Gangster Squad (2013) as the crime thriller film.
Gangster Squad is a 2013 American action crime thriller film directed by Ruben Fleischer, written by Will Beall and starring Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Nick Nolte, Emma Stone and Sean Penn.
The plot is a fictionalized account of the LAPD officers and detectives called the "Gangster Squad" who attempt to keep Los Angeles safe from Mickey Cohen and his gang during the 1940s and '50s.
WOA’s patrons enjoyed the film and the discussion with native speaker Mr.Joseph that followed.

Activate English. 5.6.: Shopping and souvenirs

The Activate English Group #5 at DOUNB library is an integral part of the EXPRESS-ENGLISH course offered to the Window on America Dnipro visitors in year 2017.

Education USA» at DniproWOA

Useful information for those wishing to study in the United States is presented at Dnipro Window on America center. Colorful brochure display of promo materials kindly sent to WOA by American universities is offered to the patrons. It reminds the "Window on America" visitors about the opportunity to study in the USA, a chance   to receive a scholarship, a possibility to travel to the USA during summer holidays.
Today a big group of WOA’s patrons took part in a session attended byEDUCATION USA representative – Ms. Kateryna. She made a concise, but informative presentation in front of a big audience – DOUNB library’s patrons who improve their English language skills with WOA’s free resources and the WOA’s staff instructions.
Young people asked Ms. Kateryna further questions about the chances to continue studies in the USA. Maybe someone from the audience is now one step closer to his dream – to study in the USA.

The Irish-American Heritage and Spring Equinox

This afternoon the Gabfest Club session was attended by our US volunteer Mr. Jason. He   puzzled the group with several tricky questions about local traditions and ways of life (“subotniks”, lack of personal space in lines, malfunctioning on-line services, etc.).
The official topic of the session was remarkable dates of the week – St. Patrick’s Day and Vernal Equinox.
The group was offered a video “The Hands that built America”. It gave an insight into the role of Irish-Americans in the development of the American nation. The new vocabulary was introduced: shamrock, leprechaun, pot of gold, Emerald Island, etc.
The second topic for discussion was the coming Vernal Equinox. The topic was illustrated with an educational video that introduced terms “equinox” and “solstice”. The discussion that followed focused on the unusual March in the USA. The group was shown a video about the snow storm Stella and its effect on the US public life and the cherry bloom in Washington D.C.
The group welcomed the newcomers and listened to their reasons to join the club.

Lexical exercises for Basic English Group

The Window on America center offers the library patrons an “Express English” activity that will help adult students to learn the basics of the English language.
The professional EFL lecturer T. Gavryliuk prepared some training videos to watch, which contained examples of pronunciation of words already known. The students repeated the words after speaker and enjoyed the process.
Lexical exercises with important cross-cultural information will help the English learners to use the Basic English in communication with foreigners in Ukraine and abroad.

The Book Thief at Wednesday Movie Club

The members of “Wednesday Movie Club” at Window on America center Dnipro, Ukraine had watched The Book Thief. Film based on the novel by the same name. The Book Thief is a 2013 American drama. Director: Brian Percival. Writers: Markus Zusak (based on the novel by), Michael Petroni (screenplay). Stars: Sophie Nélisse, Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson
Plot: While subjected to the horrors of World War II Germany, young Liesel finds solace by stealing books and sharing them with others. In the basement of her home, a Jewish refugee is being protected by her adoptive parents.
Liesel Meminger is a foster girl living outside of Munich, who scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement.
The film features a musical score by Oscar-winning composer John Williams.
WOA’s patrons enjoyed the film and the discussion that followed.

Visit of Mining University students

This afternoon the Dnipro Window on America center (Ukraine) was visited by a big group of Mining University students whose major is “Finance”.
The WOA’s Head S. Usenko presented the free resources available at the center and illustrated the presentation with the informative video about the WOA Center.
The students were also informed about the possibility to enroll to the Massive Open On-line Courses available at various educational platforms. The ambitious students were invited to   join an on-line course from the prestigious Pennsylvania University - “English for Media Literacy”.
The lecturer Ms. Krylova as a long time WOA’s partner received   souvenirs from the WOA!

JAZZ CONCERT “American Jazz Classics: Wes Montgomery”

Within the framework of the project “U.S. ART Residence in Dnipro” a concert show “American Jazz Classics: Wes Montgomery” took place the DOUNB Library’s Art department (Dnipro Window on America center, Ukraine).
 The library patrons were offered a live performance of jazz by the musician from the Dnipro’s Academy of music – guitarists, a saxophonist, a drummer and a pianist. The talented local jazz musicians were introduced by the expert – PhD in Musical Theory Ms. Irina Riabtseva.
The library patrons were delighted to learn more about the life and work of the talented guitarist Wes Montgomery. His story was illustrated with the live music numbers.
 The musicians received the round of applause from the audience and souvenirs from the DOUNB Library. The performance took place at the DOUNB library Art department.


 The WOA staff invited the musicians and the GABFEST Club committee for an after-event tea.  With the background of jazz music we discussed the plans for future cooperation of the DOUNB Library and Dnipro’s Academy of Music.

Speed English at DniproWOA: Music.

The Gabfest Club members (in Dnipro Window on America center, Ukraine) were surprised with the present from the DOUNB Library – a jazz concert on the premises of the library. To prepare themselves for the concert the group was offered a session of the SPEED ENGLISH game.
The club members had a chance to discuss in pairs their attitude to music, their favorite styles of music, the appropriate places and times for listening to music.

Spring Holidays and Music

This afternoon the Gabfest Club members (in Dnipro Window on America center, Ukraine) shared the information about the Ukrainian holidays of the week.
 The national holiday observed in Dnipro by many patriots was the anniversary of the iconic Ukrainian poet – Taras Shevchenko. The Club members were touched by the video greeting by the American Embassy staff who recited Shevchenko’s poems in Ukrainian.  For the background of the slides the images of the Ukrainian places ( a Ukrainian  church, a Ukrainian village, Monument to Taras  Shevchenko) in USA were used.


The International Women’s Day celebration was already history, but the group was surprised with the present from the DOUNB Library – a jazz concert on the premises of the library.

In the Dnipro Window on America center (Ukraine) the Basic English group  was busy with phonetic drills to master pronunciation of diphthongs and combinations of consonants.

Activate English Group 5.4.: International Women's Day Eve

This afternoon the lesson of the Activate English course was attended by our US volunteer Mr. Stephen. As the lesson took place on the eve of the International Women’s day the group was offered to instruct Mr. Stephen on Ukrainian celebration traditions.
The group started with stories how the holiday is observed at work place and what were the traditional 8th of March gifts to women. Some students shared the stories about unusual corporate gifts (candy bouquets, concert tickets, etc).
The highlight of the conversation was the explanation of the family celebrations in Ukraine. The advice to Mr. Stephen ranged from how to do the house chores to which flowers to present to his lovely Ukrainian wife Nataly.
The official topics of the lesson were “Describing People” and “My Favorite Sports”.


The professional EFL lecturer T. Gavryliuk combined the lexical exercises with important cross-cultural information that will help the English learners to understand their foreign counterparts better and to avoid awkward situations in communication.
