Pershotravensk students’ visit to WOA Dnipro

Today the WOA Dnipro has started new partnership – with the Department of Youth and Sport of the Pershotrvensk town council. Pershotravensk is a mining town located in the eastern part of Dnipro oblast, very close to the war zone. The best students and sportsmen of the town’s schools were awarded with an educational trip to Dnipro city. They visited WOA Dnipro as well.
 

The WOA Dnipro staff member T. Gavryliuk told the teenagers about the mission of the WOA Center.
They were informed about the opportunity for Ukrainian students to study in the USA. The young people were interested in the FLEX Program and will keep in mind the exchange opportunities for University students.
We hope to see today's visitors in a few years when they move to Dnipro to study at colleges and Universities.

Excursion for librarians

DOUNB Library Tour for Foreign Students

This afternoon the WOA Dnipro was visited by a group of foreign students and their lecturers.
The students from Asian and African countries will study at the National Metallurgical Academy which is a long-time partner of the WOA Dnipro.
The students were informed about the free resources available at WOA Dnipro. The non-English speaking students were invited to enroll to the WOA’s Express-English Courses. The English-speaking students were invited to join the Gabfest Speaking Club and the Movie Club.
The visitors were very enthusiastic about improving their language skills at WOA. So we hope to welcome them again very soon!
Participants number – 11 (9 students, 2 lecturers).

Visit of Mining University students

This afternoon the Dnipro Window on America center (Ukraine) was visited by a big group of Mining University students whose major is “Finance”.
The WOA’s Head S. Usenko presented the free resources available at the center and illustrated the presentation with the informative video about the WOA Center.
The students were also informed about the possibility to enroll to the Massive Open On-line Courses available at various educational platforms. The ambitious students were invited to   join an on-line course from the prestigious Pennsylvania University - “English for Media Literacy”.
The lecturer Ms. Krylova as a long time WOA’s partner received   souvenirs from the WOA!

WOA’s INRODUCTION to PAVLOGRAD Students

During the Spring Break visit to Dnipropetrovsk a big group of Pavlograd high school students (school No.5) were invited to visit the WOA Center Dnipropetrovsk.
The WOA staff member T. Gavryliuk introduced to the visitors the “УкраїнаSpeaking” project and the “Window  On America” Center (Dnipropetrovsk) .
 The students were informed about the academic exchange opportunities for school students (FLEX program) and University students (the Fulbright exchange).
The students were invited to follow WOA Dnipropetrovsk Facebook page to keep in touch and be aware of the news.
The positive wrap-up of the presentation was a photo near the book installation about the English Language at the partner library department (the foreign languages division).

Spring Break Library Tour

During the school Spring break WOA staff member T. Gavryliuk invited the 6th year students of the local school No.58 for a DOUNB Library Tour. The highlight of the tour was the introduction of the УкраїнаSpeaking project and a brief presentation of the WOA Center and FLEX program for academic exchange of school students. Within the frame work of the “Year of the English Language” initiative the children where familiarized with the book installations and hand-made crafts (dolls and tourist attractions) that introduce the English language at the WOA’s partner department – the department of foreign languages documents.
The other WOA’s partner – the Art department of the DOUNB Library – surprised the students with the book display “The Art of Book Production” and complementing displays: a fascinating collection miniature books and the exhibition of local painters’ art works used as book illustrations.

Studens of Juridical Lyceum

Within the framework of the educational project #УкраїнаSpeaking DOUNB Library and "Window on America" Center were presented to new comers.
Studens of Juridical Lyceum learned about the modern library service which operates 24 hours 7 days a week through its website and online catalog. Head of the "Window on America" center Svetlana Usenko told the members of Activate English Club about the planned activities to observe the "Year of English in Ukraine" and #УкраїнаSpeaking project # that will help all who wish to improve their knowledge of English.
Library members were acquainted with the WOA Center’s book collection and learned about the opportunity to use its free resources for learning English: attending Movie club and English-speaking club, access to e-LibraryUSA, the vocabulary board games. The students watched a slide show that highlighted on-line resources such as УкраїнаSpeaking, American English, Voice of America, SHAREAMERICA, English is fun and others.

Presentation of WOA’s resources for students

Today "Window on America" center (Dnipropetrovsk / Ukraine) had a presentation of free resources for those wishing to improve their English skills. The presentation was arranged for the first-year students group from the Dnipropetrovsk National Mining University of Ukraine (NMUU).
They listened to the presentation of the useful library resources for languages’ study and free resources for improving the English skills. Students examined the WOA’s technical equipment, the DOUNB Library’s collection of documents in foreign languages at the respective department, the WOA’s  book & image display  “If you want to study in the USA” and “America 24/7”.
Students learned about the numerous activities:
-    free access to the digital “eLibrary USA” to prepare scientific papers,
-    possibility to watch US movies with authentic soundtrack  ( in a group or individually),
-    possibility to meet  native speakers at the “Gabfest” English-speaking  club  sessions.
 

The students reviewed the promotional trailer about the library resources and received promotional materials. They were invited to follow the WOA’s announcements via the website, social networks (Facebook), to view reference materials and on-line links to the blog (http://woadnepr.blogspot.com/).

A  Speed TOUR of Window on America and Resources Presentation.
In the course of the DOUNB Library tour the WOA center was visited by a group of Dnipropetrovsk province librarians. They attend the skills’ up-grading courses at the DOUNB Training Center for librarians. The group was introduced to the wide range of WOA’s resources for the English language study. The activities most popular  among library patrons were presented to the group -  the theme book displays, weekly movie club and weekly English-speaking clubs for different age groups (for teens and adults).
The group members received the WOA’s promotional materials.

Excursion

A group of the sixth year students from the local school No. 141 were invited today for a guided tour of the DOUNB Library. As the school is specialized in studying foreign languages the children were particularly active during their visit to the Window on America center and the Foreign Literature department (Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine).
The staff of these library departments offered the children entertaining games and activities in foreign languages they study at school – English and German. 
The quiz about fairy tales allowed the kids to demonstrate their knowledge of the topic. The quiz was followed by gift presentation to the winners and watching an animated cartoon on the big screen.
 Number of participants – 29 (2 teachers + 27 pupils).

Dnipropetrovsk College for Culture and Arts

Excursion for College Students.
The Window on America center in Dnipropetrovsk was visited by a group of students and teacher from the Dnipropetrovsk College for Culture and Arts. The students’ major was “Library Science”.
The WOA center Head, Svitlana Usenko, made a presentation about the history of the facility and the resources available at the center. She informed the group about the free resources available on-line and recommended by the US State Department.
The students were invited to attend the weekly sessions of the WOA’s speaking club where they can listen to the American English. Wednesday Movie Club was also introduced   to those who wish to improve their comprehension skills by watching American classical movies with the original sound tracks.
The guests were impressed by the range of the technical equipment available at the WOA center – several PC stations, multimedia projector, modern gadgets (Kindle and iPad), Rosetta Stone software, etc. All these resources can help anyone to improve the English language skills.
Two Book displays were presented to the group: «Christopher Columbus and US Columbus  Day» and   «International Teacher’s Day: methodology for ESL teachers».

The Dnipropetrovsk WOA Center was a place for library staff training.
The WOA Head Svitlana Usenko introduced to the group of librarians – the software and on-line resources for the English language study recommended by the US State department. The donated gadgets iPad and Kindle were presented to the audience.
The librarians were invited to join the WOA’s popular Clubs:
-    The Movie Club
-    The English-speaking Club GABFEST.
The Movie Club allows the participants to check their English auditing and comprehension skills. Regular visits of foreign guests to the Gabfest Club allow to improve one’s English speaking skills.
Number of visitors – 19 persons.

On May, 22, 2013 the WOA Centre Dnipropetrovsk was visited by a group of students from the National Mining University. The students major in economics and financing.
The WOA Head Svitlana Usenko showed the video on the history of the facility.
The free resources of the WOA Centre were introduced to the group – the software and on-line resources for the English language study recommended by the US State department. The donated gadgets iPad and Kindle were presented to the audience.
The students were invited to join the WOA’s popular Clubs:

Librarians at WOA

Mrs. Marina A.,  the  librarian from a provincial library in Dnipropetrovsk region,  is exploring the materials about the Florida state. She has a special interest in it – her friend has recently moved to this world famous  tourist destination.

The Head of the Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk Svitlana Usenko met the group of  librarians (Dnipropetrovsk district libraries).
She told about the DOUNB library electronic catalog, free resources for learning English and most popular activities of the Window on America center.
She informed the librarians about the free resources available on-line and recommended by the US State Department:
- Rosetta Stone software
- the software Trace Effects
- on-line resources (American Online English, Voice of America The Classroom…) for the English language study recommended by the US State department.
The donated gadgets iPad and Kindle were presented to the audience.
