hristmas Art Therapy at School No.22

Dnipro high school № 22 provides in-depth study of English; it’s a specialized school – one of the best in town. For many years it cooperates with DOUNB Library and "Window on America" Center.
The WOA’s Head Svetlana Usenko told students about American Christmas and New Year traditions. 3 lessons in which Svitlana participated flew like a flash. The students’ show was followed by slide-show presentation and demonstration of relevant videos. The students learned about the annual celebration in the USA.
The final Christmas activity offered to the students was coloring Christmas pictures. Many of the students left school with a lovely Christmas gift for their parents.
Number of participants – 75 persons.

St.Valentine’s Day and its observance in the USA

Today the staff of the Foreign literature department and Window on America center visited school No.141. This school is a long-time partner of the DOUNB Library as it has a focus on English study.
The aim of the visit was to tell the children about a popular American Holiday Valentine’s Day and its observance.
The children were offered a slide show about the holiday’s background and legends about Valentine.
Several sing-along songs were very popular with kids: they learned how to spell the word “HEART” and remember the pretty colors for Valentine cards.
To wrap up the presentation the WOA staff offered big-screening of the iconic Disney cartoon “Chip and Dale and Miss”. Children of all ages enjoyed the funny chipmunks’ love story.
The children were fascinated with the songs and stories, eagerly answered rather complicated questions and impressed the WOA staff with their interest in English study.
Number of participants – 130 persons.

Autumn School Break with the DOUNB Library and DniproWOA

The students of the local school №28   know how to combine “business and pleasure” – during the autumn break from school they usually visit the "Window to America" Information and Resource Center.  Today they started with a book display of WOA’s English-language dictionaries. Paper-based dictionaries sometimes provide more information than on-line dictionaries.
After that the students got acquainted with the biography of the famous American lexicographer Noah Webster. His achievements were so outstanding that a national holiday was introduced in the USA - the Dictionary Day. The kids were impressed by the fact that 100,000 copies of the English textbook by Noah Webster were published; 5 generations of Americans studied the language with its help.

At the end of the meeting, the group was offered information on the principles of academic integrity – they learned the etymology and meaning of the word "plagiarism". We analyzed several examples of plagiarism which Ukrainian students practice. The students promised to be careful and virtuous while making their school projects.
Participants number – 15 persons.
