English Speaking club - Bill Gates's succsess

The Man Who Has Everything.

A slide show dedicated to Bill Gates

The notion of “Success”  was the main aspect of discussion. The club-members discussed the ways and conditions of its achievement. It was useful and interesting to find out facts about the life of this famous businessman- entrepreneur, the computer genious of the USA,  Bill Gates. A slide show dedicated to this person was shown.
The other questions were answered:
- Are the starting conditions important for achieving success?
- Is influence and help of the parents important?  
- Does “success” mean   “ money”, “a lot of money”?

Everybody realized  that American billionaires Bill Gates and Warren Buffett do a lot of  charity work and urge  other people to do the same, because the world needs the help, and they are the only people who can give it to the world.

The members of the ESC learned about the activity of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in Ukraine: the Region Science Library got a grant for a realization of a project “Bibliomist”.
When we become rich enough, we will follow the example of Bill and Melinda Gates!

A book-exhibit to the World Children Day

A book-exhibit to the World Children Day was represented.
This is literature for children of famous book publishing houses such as Sсholastic, Childrеn’s Press. The books are encyclopedias, atlases, reference editions, books dedicated to American holidays, history of the USA, its cities, the way of becoming independent, outgoing figures of American politics and culture.

«MEET the United States of America» for kids



The «Window to America» Center was visited by the group of schoolchildren of school № 143 together with their teacher of English Olga Gavrilyuk.
The Meeting was devoted to an acquaintance with the United States of America.
Guests watched the slide show «MEET the United States of America», from which they learnt about a geographical location of the country, founder of America Christopher Columbus, native population - Indians, people which created history of country – first presidents and political figures, about the American icons of pop-culture, the biggest cities are centers of economics and culture, about architectural views of these cities.
It was useful for pupils to learn about the national symbols of the USA –  flag, bald eagle, rose, White house, Congress, Statue of Liberty, memorials in honour to the presidents Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln.
The Head of the center «Window to America» Svitlana Usenko paid a regard to a rich collection of bright and interesting child's books which would help to improve pupils’ knowledge of English.
Schoolchildren were eager to hear new information. They thanked sincerely in the end of the meeting.
After presentation we had tea together.

English Speaking club - Alaska Day

Alaska Day is a legal holiday in the U.S. state of Alaska, observed on October 18. It is the anniversary of the formal transfer of the Territory of Alaska from Russia to the United States which took place at a flag-raising ceremony at Fort Sitka on Friday October 18, 1867.
The topic of the meeting was Alaska Day.
The members of the club watched a slide-show and learnt the symbols of Alaska and its sights. The club-members found out that there were 6 National parks in Alaska.
Later people answered the question about the history of this state, Russian roots of this land.
We learnt the modern population, its occupation, traditions. We watched a video from Alaska of one club-member, participant of the program Work and Travel USA.
There were offered bright books from the Center WOA on geography of the USA.
Discussed the marvelous cake Bomb Alaska and even watched a video with a recipe of it. It was an interesting acquaintance with a wonderful corner of the USA.
Number of participants – 29 (specialists, students, schoolchildren, librarian)

English Speaking club - What is Poverty?

The meeting was dedicated to the International Day for Eradication of Poverty. The club-members watched a slide-show and learnt what the level of poverty is, what countries are poor, what rich countries do in order to struggle against poverty.
We sympathized with poor countries and tried to determine poverty level in Ukraine.
The discussion about natural, political, economical causes of poverty started.

Our guest from Canada, ethnic Ukrainian, Ksenia Put’ko took the active part in our discussion. As a specialist in global economics she presented her vision of poverty in different countries in the world.

Excursion of English teachers

A group of Ukrainian teachers of English visited the Center WOA.
Svitlana Usenko, the head of Window on America center, presented the resources of the Center and offered some variants for cooperation with the local schools.
The  teachers of English were shown also the Dnipropetrovsk library web site, WOA center blog, pages on Facebook and Vkontakte.
They  watched a slide show dedicated to the Window on America’s history and  its activities and a video about our Center on YouTube.

It was interesting to get acquainted with a program Rosetta Stone which can be interesting for self-studying of their pupils.
It’s always pleasant for us to share our experience with our colleagues.

English Speaking club - American architecture


The topic of the meeting  was Architecture. The leader of this meeting was Eugene Borisenko, an architect. 
He told the club-members about all architectural styles and illustrated his words with amazing pictures. He paid special attention to the architectural styles that are common in the USA - Palladian architecture, eclecticism, art nouveau, constructivism, post-modernism, high-tech. 

Then we watched a movie about architectural style of New-York, where you can find different skyscrapers. 
The Club-members had a lot of questions and they received the answers to them thanks to the specialist Eugene. We discussed the architectural style of our city and the other cities of Ukraine.  
To see the architecture of American buildings was possible due to the books of our Center.

A paper show “American Music”

There was a paper show “American Music” devoted to the International Music Day.

English Speaking club dedicated to Ukrainian Library Day

The meeting was dedicated to Ukrainian Library Day and International Translation Day which were celebrated on the 30 th of September.
WOA Center is a prototype of an American library in Ukraine, where every person can equal tights and a free opportunity of getting necessary information thanks to the books or Internet.
The visitors of the Center watched a slide-show about the WOA Center in Dnipropetrovsk, its events, meetings, guests.
A presentation of new resources – 3 audio books. That are  English self-taught books.
The second topic of the meeting was International Translation day. The lub-members discussed the profession of a tranlator and the problems of translation. Look video here
The Head of the Center Svitlana Usenko told the visitors about her business-trip to annual seminar of the heads of the centers WOA. Dnopropetrovsk Windoa on America became one of the 5 best WOA centers in Ukraine (among 29 centers)
