JAZZ CONCERT “American Jazz Classics: Wes Montgomery”

Within the framework of the project “U.S. ART Residence in Dnipro” a concert show “American Jazz Classics: Wes Montgomery” took place the DOUNB Library’s Art department (Dnipro Window on America center, Ukraine).
 The library patrons were offered a live performance of jazz by the musician from the Dnipro’s Academy of music – guitarists, a saxophonist, a drummer and a pianist. The talented local jazz musicians were introduced by the expert – PhD in Musical Theory Ms. Irina Riabtseva.
The library patrons were delighted to learn more about the life and work of the talented guitarist Wes Montgomery. His story was illustrated with the live music numbers.
 The musicians received the round of applause from the audience and souvenirs from the DOUNB Library. The performance took place at the DOUNB library Art department.


 The WOA staff invited the musicians and the GABFEST Club committee for an after-event tea.  With the background of jazz music we discussed the plans for future cooperation of the DOUNB Library and Dnipro’s Academy of Music.
Participants number – 55 persons.

Speed English at DniproWOA: Music.

The Gabfest Club members (in Dnipro Window on America center, Ukraine) were surprised with the present from the DOUNB Library – a jazz concert on the premises of the library. To prepare themselves for the concert the group was offered a session of the SPEED ENGLISH game.
The club members had a chance to discuss in pairs their attitude to music, their favorite styles of music, the appropriate places and times for listening to music.
Participants number – 45 persons.

Spring Holidays and Music

This afternoon the Gabfest Club members (in Dnipro Window on America center, Ukraine) shared the information about the Ukrainian holidays of the week.
 The national holiday observed in Dnipro by many patriots was the anniversary of the iconic Ukrainian poet – Taras Shevchenko. The Club members were touched by the video greeting by the American Embassy staff who recited Shevchenko’s poems in Ukrainian.  For the background of the slides the images of the Ukrainian places ( a Ukrainian  church, a Ukrainian village, Monument to Taras  Shevchenko) in USA were used.


The International Women’s Day celebration was already history, but the group was surprised with the present from the DOUNB Library – a jazz concert on the premises of the library.

Music Scene and Heard

The Dnipropetrovsk Window on America center presented to the patrons a paper show “Music Scene and Heard”. 
April is observed in the USA as the “Jazz appreciation month”, therefore the focus of the show was on the panels that deal with American jazz and other genres of music that Ukrainian audience associates with the American music. Pop/Rock, Musical theater and religious music complemented the information about Jazz.
The panels represent collages with the images of the American stars in the above-mentioned genres and provide comments to the images.

The Spring Jazz Talk

Within the framework of the project “U.S. ART Residence in Dnipropetrovsk” the session of English speaking club GABFEST was dedicated  to «American Jazz Divas». March is a good time to introduce female artists whose input into American jazz was very considerable. The session’s moderator T.Gavryliuk prepared a compilation of videos about most famous American female jazz singers – both vintage and contemporary. The compilation presented important ladies in American jazz and introduced the audience to the golden jazz hits performed by Ella Fitzgerlad, Billi Holiday, Barbara Strerisand and Chaka Khan. The Club members had the opportunity to read the lyrics and enjoy both the jazz music and the texts.
 


The genuine surprise of the session was a live performance of jazz by the musician from the Dnipropetrovsk Conservatorium – Yakov Tsvetynskiy (trumpet). The talented local jazz musician was introduced by the expert – PhD in Musical Theory Ms. Irina Riabtseva.
The Club members were delighted to learn more about the history of the American jazz with the live music illustrations. The guest   received the round of applause and a gift .The performance took place at the DOUNB library Art department.


The WOA staff invited the musicians and the GABFEST Club committee for an after-event tea.  With the background of jazz music we discussed the plans for future cooperation of the DOUNB Library and Dnipropetrovsk Conservatorium.

“U.S. Music” - 4, 5

The "U.S. Art Residence in Dnipropetrovsk” project involved two groups of students from the local school No. 141. to present a lecture “U.S. Music”.
The 7-8th-year students learned a lot of curious facts about the history of the American music at the Window on America (Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine). They have listened to the musical fragments that introduced typical American styles of music: jazz, country, pop, rock, disco, zydeco, gospel, etc. They also learned about the world known American opera composer – George Gershwin – and listened to some tunes from his iconic opera “Porgy and Bess”. The students learned about the musical instruments that are specific for each of the above musical styles and learned new vocabulary.
The students with interest examined the books and images that illustrate the topic at a book display at the Window on America Centre.

U.S. Art Residence: American Music & Musician



The "U.S. Art Residence in Dnipropetrovsk” project started!
The aim of the project is:

- To introduce the  free resources available at the DOUNBt Library
- To attract new users to the "Window on America" center  ​​in Dnipropetrovsk.
- To promote different types of reading including e-readers.
- Promotion of American art and culture among the residents of Dnipropetrovsk by way of expanding the library partnerships with cultural institutions, art and educational institutions.
- In the created "Art Residence USA" on the premises of the "Window on America "Centre in Dnipropetrovsk a series of activities will be held  to disseminate  knowledge about the American culture, traditions and art.
Well, we started a project that will popularize reading of the literature on art from the library collections. The goal of the project is to form the basics of the artistic outlook using as samples the creative works of American artists, painters and musicians.
We dream to expand the knowledge of the Dnepropetrovsk technical universities students
’ on American culture , to  develop their artistic tastes and respect for the culture of the American people.

The "U.S. Art Residence in Dnipropetrovsk” project started with the WOA’s visit to the local high school No. 22. to present a lecture “US Music”. The 6th-11th year students learned a lot of curious facts about the history of the American music. They have listened to the musical fragments that introduced typically American styles of music: jazz, country, pop, rock, disco, zydeco, gospel, etc. They also learned about the world known American opera composer – George Gershwin – and listened to some tunes from his cult opera “Porgy and Bess”. The students learned about the musical instruments that are specific for each of the above musical styles and learned new vocabulary. A challenging task was given to the students - to write an essay “Music in the USA” and express their attitude to this music. The students with interest examined the books and images that illustrate the topic as a book display at the Window on America Centre. All the interested student were invited to join the events with the native speakers on the premises of the DOUNB Library. The information on the USA musical culture was spread to more than 250 persons audience (students and teachers).

The school students actively participate in tests for the FLEX exchange program. When somebody will be selected for the exchange he /she will be well prepared to enjoy American music.
Number of participants – 250 (10 teachers + 240 pupils).
