The session of the American Teen Club took place in Window on America Dnipropetrovsk (Ukraine).
The «УкраїнаSpeaking» project was presented to small group and the visitors were urged to follow the project’s pages in the popular social networks.
The Head of WOA Svitlana Usenko prepared several educational activities for the group. The group watched videos about history of St.Valentine’s Day, learned vocabulary.
A slide show with 12 popular idioms and slang words about love and dating was presented to the group. Finding of Ukrainian equivalents to all idioms was quite a challenge.
The second part of the session was a conversation about “bad dates”. The group was offered a slide show with beautiful views of Chicago and a story of a Chicago girl about her Valentine’s Day date that went wrong. We talked about the situations when a date is considered a bad date.
To wrap up the conversation the WOA staff asked the school students some questions and we had a tea party.

Today’s session of the American Teen Club (at Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine) started with the introductions of the “УкраїнаSpeaking” project. The aim is to draw attention of the young generation to the importance of the foreign language skills.
The official topic of the Teen Club was Chinese New Year. The group was offered to describe several images with the artifacts of Chinese culture: coins, utensils, etc.
The WOA staff member T. Gavryliuk presented the Chinese Zodiac to the group in English. It is a repeating cycle of 12 years, with each year being represented by an animal and its reputed attributes. Traditionally these zodiac animals were used to date the years. In order, the 12 animals are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. The teenagers explored the provided table and shared the information about their birth year according to the Chinese Zodiac.
Besides, the group was told about the life of Chinese community in the USA. We have watched several videos about the history of celebration of the Chinese New Year in the USA, about the culture of the America-born Chinese teenagers.
The most anticipated activity was the word game “Apples to Apples”. The fans of the game Eric and Yegor presented the rules to the rest of the group. Marina as the only lady at the session was offered the role of the Judge. The boys introduced our UK guest Mr. Paul to this hilarious game of crazy comparisons. Both senior students and the medium school students enjoyed the “Apples to Apples” game.

Today’s session of the Teen Club was attended by few brave boys – Eric and Yegor. The rest of the teenagers stayed at home due to the flu epidemic. At the beginning of the session the WOA staff encouraged the boys to share their tastes in winter songs. Eric suggested that we listen and translate the iconic winter time songs: “Happy New Year” by ABBA and “Santa Clause is coming to town” by different popular performers – from classical to rock.
A cup of tea with sweet snacks activated the brain cells and prepared the boys to a brain-storm - the teenagers were introduced to the WOA’s table games. The “Apples to Apples” game was explained in detail and the boys really enjoyed playing it from the first round.
At a later stage the teenagers were joined by our UK volunteer Mr. Paul. The group enjoyed playing the “Monopoly” game. The boys had a chance to practice their introduction phrases.

During the tea session, several foreign guests, Mr. Jason and Mr. Paul, joined in with interesting topics for conversation.
The Clubs moderator Anna Akastiolova (a FLEX Alumnus), who is a long time WOA’s friend and volunteer. She prepared several educational activities for the group.
The club members exchanged information on their school week and the week-end events. The group played vocabulary games (Activate Games) at the table and simple motion games outside the table for a change.
They also watched the cartoons and made translation of the popular tunes from the favorite Disney cartoons. The original subtitles helped the group a lot and introduced many new words and expressions.

American Teen Club – «Winter Active Special»
Today’s session of the TEEN CLUB session (at Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine) was moderated by the WOA’s staff member Tamara Gavryliuk. The majority of the teenagers were new to the club. The introduction ritual was offered and the girls gladly introduced themselves. They all have beginner’s level and need to improve their skills. During the introductions we learned that some girls live close to the WOA center, some had to commute a long way from the other side of the river Dnipro. They all have pets and have hobbies: sports, art, literature, dances.
The second part of the session was dedicated to the introduction of the new vocabulary – winter sports and fun activities. The girls were offered a slide show with illustrated words.
The pleasant surprise to all of them was the arrival of the WOA’s native-speaking guest – Mr. Paul from the UK. The teenagers had a chance to hear two variants of the English language: American English in the slide show and British English in Mr. Paul’s comments to the slide show.
The girls were impressed and motivated to work on their vocabulary. They look forward to the TEEN Club sessions with more participants to impress them with their drilled introductions.

Christmas Fun for Teenagers – Christmas bells jingle - 5
"Window on America" Information and Resource Center (Dnipropetrovsk / Ukraine) held the fifth cultural event in the project "Christmas bells jingle" for the "American Teen Club" members. The meeting was prepared and moderated by the Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) program graduates Akastyelova Anna and Olga Chichikalo. The event was attended by the WOA’s American volunteer Mr. Jason.
"Window on America" Center offers all its resources to make the Club sessions interesting, effective and positive at the same time. To break the ice the teenagers played some motion games. The slide show “American traditions and symbols of Christmas” was reviewed with a lot of interest. Teen Club leaders Olga and Anna showed the members how to make DIY festive Christmas paper decorations. Can you imagine a New Year party in Ukraine without sweet treats and tangerines? Teen Club holiday table was no exception.
Teenagers left the library in a good mood and with new knowledge.

Second part of meeting was dedicated to the Monopoly (board game).
Monopoly is a board game that originated in the United States in 1903 as a way to demonstrate the evils of land ownership. The current version was published by Parker Brothers in 1935. Subtitled "The Fast-Dealing Property Trading Game", the game is named after the economic concept of monopoly – the domination of a market by a single entity. It is now produced by the United States game and toy company Hasbro. Players move around the gameboard buying or trading properties, developing their properties with houses and hotels, and collecting rent from their opponents, with the goal being to drive them all into bankruptcy leaving one monopolist in control of the entire economy.
WOA’s young patrons enjoyed the game.

The club members exchanged information on their school week and the week-end events.
The Clubs moderator Anna Akastiolova (a FLEX Alumnus) prepared several educational activities for the group. It was a challenge as the age of participants ranged from primary school students to freshmen.
The group played vocabulary games at the table and simple motion games outside the table for a change.
They also learned some pairs of words in which one sound or a simple pre-fix changed the meaning to the opposite (accept - except, flammable - inflammable, emigrate - immigrate, etc.)
The most challenging activity was translation of the popular tunes from the favorite Disney cartoons.
The original subtitles helped the group a lot and introduced many new words and expressions.

Today "American Teen Club" session took place at WOA Dnipropetrovsk (Ukraine). It was prepared and moderated by Anna Akastyelova – Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) alumnus and DOUNB library’s friend and volunteer. Information Resource Center "Window on America" offers all its resources to make meetings interesting, educational and funny at the same time.
New "American Teen Club" members were welcomed by WOA’s American volunteer Mr. Jason. Anna presented to them a popular American holiday – Thanksgiving. The participants received sweet treats and were offered to play a linguistic game. The task was to make new words using the letters from the new vocabulary on the topic "Thanksgiving". Educational videos and big screening of animated cartoons helped to understanding the new vocabulary better.
The next activity was the introduction of popular English idioms, among them «two peas in a pot». The group also played one of the games from the American English set “Activate”.
Action game offered by the moderator introduced some physical exercise, fun and words from the topic “Human body parts”. Questions and answerers activity was enjoyed by all participants.
The teenagers left the library in high spirits and with new knowledge.

The group of teenagers tried themselves as actors; they made short stories (Fables).
The highlight of the session was introduction of the board games set “Activate”. The group was offered a trial set of educational games for American English learners. The participants selected and played the game “Name your favorite …”.
The session was a funny and educational event that introduced new trends in language learning.

The group started the preparation to the “Games at the Library” event. They played “The Game of Unspeakable Fun” – the Taboo. “It’s what you don’t say!” is the slogan of this game.
The American Teen Club’s moderator Ania Akastiolova (FLEX Alumni) offered some vocabulary games as well to memorize popular English idioms.
As a cross cultural activity the Ukrainian teenagers introduced Mr. Jason to the iconic Soviet cartoon and explained the most famous details in English. The cartoon introduced a selfie four decades before taking selfies became an international trend among the young people.

During the session the group was involved into educational activities: reading, translation, answering questions of the moderator.
The second part of the club’s session was devoted to educational and linguistic desktop card game "Apples to Apples". Players had to learn how to make English phrases using "red apple" cards (which generally feature a noun) and matching "green apple" cards (which contain an adjective) Every player had to choose a strategy to win. The game was both funny and educational for English learners.

The focus of attention was on a range of English idioms that might be useful in communication with native speakers. The attention was drawn to the cases where English words resembled Russian words, but had totally different meaning. The group was impressed with the complicated world of set phrases and expressions that exist in English.

During the session the club members trained their auditing skills (improved skills of English speech comprehension) and exercised their grammar skills. The Club members watched educational videos, answered questions of the online grammar test, and described wonderful paintings by American artist Norman Rockwell. Young people learned more about this talented New York artist who created outstanding landscapes of the American nature.
New knowledge and good mood are the most valuable acquisitions of the American Teen Club members .

The meeting of American Teen Club was dedicated to the topic «Theater» (Dnipropetrovsk / Ukraine) for teenagers, who are willing to improve their English language, get to know about the United States and have a good time!
The meeting was lead by the FLEX alumni Hanna Akastjolova.
Participants watched a romance film Shakespeare in Love (1998) and discussed it. This movie is about a young Shakespeare, out of ideas and short of cash, meets his ideal woman and is inspired to write one of his most famous plays.
Everyone was engaged and practiced their speaking skills!
