The session of the revived Grasshoppers Club took place at WOA Dnipro this afternoon.
It was prepared and moderated by WOA’s volunteer Anna Motorina, a fluent speaker of English and a high school student (Dnipro’s School #9), ready to share her knowledge.
The session consisted of several types of language activities, new vocabulary introduction, cognitive videos watching, games and active discussion.
The topic of today session was “Grammar: Past Simple Tense”.
The most anticipated activity was the word game “Apples to Apples”. The fan of the game Svitlana presented the rules to the rest of the group. And she was a Judge. The boys and girls introduced her to their hilarious game of crazy comparisons. School students enjoyed the “Apples to Apples” game.

Master students of the Electrical Engineering faculty visited "Window on America" center. They got acquainted with various services this center offers to everyone interested in the language and culture of the USA.
One of the most useful was the opportunity to access one of the biggest electronic libraries e-Library USA. This electronic resource can be very helpful in their research and preparation for Master thesis.
You can both work and have fun at the "Window on America" center.
"Apples to Apples" is one of the various board games the Center visitors can enjoy. This simple game is a funny chance to use your imagination and learn new words and their combinations.
Learning can be fun with Window on America and the Department of Foreign Languages.

Today’s session of the American Teen Club (at Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine) started with the introductions of the “УкраїнаSpeaking” project. The aim is to draw attention of the young generation to the importance of the foreign language skills.
The official topic of the Teen Club was Chinese New Year. The group was offered to describe several images with the artifacts of Chinese culture: coins, utensils, etc.
The WOA staff member T. Gavryliuk presented the Chinese Zodiac to the group in English. It is a repeating cycle of 12 years, with each year being represented by an animal and its reputed attributes. Traditionally these zodiac animals were used to date the years. In order, the 12 animals are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. The teenagers explored the provided table and shared the information about their birth year according to the Chinese Zodiac.
Besides, the group was told about the life of Chinese community in the USA. We have watched several videos about the history of celebration of the Chinese New Year in the USA, about the culture of the America-born Chinese teenagers.
The most anticipated activity was the word game “Apples to Apples”. The fans of the game Eric and Yegor presented the rules to the rest of the group. Marina as the only lady at the session was offered the role of the Judge. The boys introduced our UK guest Mr. Paul to this hilarious game of crazy comparisons. Both senior students and the medium school students enjoyed the “Apples to Apples” game.

Today’s session of the Teen Club was attended by few brave boys – Eric and Yegor. The rest of the teenagers stayed at home due to the flu epidemic. At the beginning of the session the WOA staff encouraged the boys to share their tastes in winter songs. Eric suggested that we listen and translate the iconic winter time songs: “Happy New Year” by ABBA and “Santa Clause is coming to town” by different popular performers – from classical to rock.
A cup of tea with sweet snacks activated the brain cells and prepared the boys to a brain-storm - the teenagers were introduced to the WOA’s table games. The “Apples to Apples” game was explained in detail and the boys really enjoyed playing it from the first round.
At a later stage the teenagers were joined by our UK volunteer Mr. Paul. The group enjoyed playing the “Monopoly” game. The boys had a chance to practice their introduction phrases.

Universal Scientific Library Project continues cooperation with school № 141. That day a group of students visited the information-resource center "Window on America" on the tour, but with gifts. It was a collection of wonderful hand-made Christmas and New Year cards for librarians! Students’ attitude pleasantly surprised and inspired the library employees. Initially, the children watched a promotional trailer about the modern services available at the WOA center, learned about the opportunity to use its free resources for learning English. Then the children examined the WOA’s free access collections. They were impressed with the collection of authentic books and movies on DVD. The films can be watched in a group or individually. Book display "If you want to study in the US" encouraged to dream about studying abroad.
WOA’s Head Svitlana Usenko introduced the grand and beautiful mountains of North America, referring to the book and image display "We love mountains". A poster display "America 24/7" impressed all WOA’s visitors. Students have been introduced to the rules and played a popular board game «Apple to Apples», which activates the English vocabulary.
The highlight of the visit was the arrival of the WOA’s volunteer Mr. Jason. Young people had a chance to meet a native speaker for the first time in their life. The children were not lost and asked a lot of interesting questions. We believe that this visit will further motivate students to learn English.

"Window on America" information and resource center was visited by a group of the 8th year students from the neighboring School №23 with profound study of English. The WOA’s Head presented helpful free library resources for learning and improving the level of English independently.
Students were encouraged to use the WOA’s computers to visit the web-site of the DOUNB library, WOA’s blog and FB-page. Young people examined the WOA’s collections with great interest. They liked everything – collections of books and movies, the display of promotional materials from US colleges and universities "If you want to study in the US", the posters display "America 24/7".
Students learned about the opportunity to use the digital library ‘eLibrary USA’ to prepare academic papers, to watch English movies (in a group and individually), to communicate with native speakers in the speaking club “Gabfest”. The group reviewed the promotional trailer of modern library services, several videos about Chicago and New York, listened to music of the American composer George Gershwin and the youth group Pentatonix.
The 8th graders are still young kids and showed interest in less academic WOA’s articles. They located the shelves of open access table games, instantly learned the rules and had a round of ‘Apples to Apples game’. This game activates the English vocabulary knowledge in a funny way.
The teacher fixed the date for the next visit: in the WOA’s collection the students found a movie they would like to watch. WOA staff and the students look forward to see each other again very soon.

«Movie Afternoon» and WOA’s free resources presentation
The Window on America Center Dnipropetrovsk was visited by the 8th grade students from the local high school number 22, it provides in-depth study of English and is one of the best in town the school is a longtime partner of the WOA Center and the DOUNB library.
The Center’s free resources for learning English were presented to the group. The activities most popular among library patrons were presented to the group - the theme book displays, weekly Movie club and weekly English-speaking clubs for different age groups (for teens and adults).
Then students watched the family movie “Mr. Popper's Penguins” (2011).
It’s a funny story about the life of a businessman, which begins to change after he inherits six penguins, and as he transforms his apartment into a winter wonderland, his professional side starts to unravel.
After the movie WOA’s Head Svitlana Usenko offered to play “Apples to Apples”- the game of hilarious comparisons. It's as easy as comparing apples to apple: just open the box, deal the cards and you're ready to play. Select the card from your hand that you think is best described by a card played by the judge. Each game round is filled with surprising and outrageous comparisons from a wide range of people, places, things and events.
The students have inspected the book and image display «VE-Day – the 70th Anniversary», a paper display «Music Scene and Heard», and a «New arrivals» display. The focus of the paper display was on the panels that deal with American jazz and other genres of music that Ukrainian audience associates with the American music. Pop/Rock, Musical theater and religious music complemented the information about Jazz. The panels represent collages with the images of the American stars in the above-mentioned genres and provide comments to the images.
The highlight the new arrivals display is pop-up book «Ice Age».

Studying English

This day the American Teen Club meeting was dedicated to the topic "St. Valentine’s Day".
"Window on America" center hosted American Teen Club members,
Dnipropetrovsk teenagers, who are willing to improve their English
language, get to know about the United States and have a good time! The
meeting was lead by the FLEX alumni Darya Gerasymova'13 and Hanna
Akastelova’13.
The youth from the American Teen Club learned how to
express one’s feelings in English. They shared their wonderful mood,
treated each other with chocolate candies and cakes.
The wonderful atmosphere of the Valentine’s Day was complemented with watching the favorite series “Friends”.
The young people especially enjoyed the vocabulary battle “Apples to Apples”. This table game is very useful as it helps the students of
English to activate their vocabulary and use it in conversations.
Everyone was engaged and practiced their speaking skills!
