Express-English Basic Group. Meeting 1.2

Express-English Basic Group. Meeting 1.2.
This afternoon the second session of the Basic English Group took place at the DOUNB Library in Window on America Dnipropetrovsk (Ukraine).
The Group was founded as a training site for people who never studied English or for those who need to return to the basics of the language.
The pronunciation of the English vowels was introduced to the group and. As an illustration several YouTube videos were demonstrated to introduce the native-speaking pronunciation and its peculiarities. The group was familiarized with the basic reading rules for vowels.
The sessions of the Express-English Basic Group started used the premises of the WOA Center and its technical resources – the multimedia equipment and internet connection.
 

To practice reading we used the WOA’s table game “BOGGLE” which introduced new vocabulary and spelling of the one syllable words.
All the participants found the session educational and helpful.
Number of participants – 15 persons.

Games and learning

The "Window on America" center (Dnipropetrovsk / Ukraine) resumed sessions of the "American TEEN club" where students can improve their English skills, learn more about the United States and have a nice time with friends. The session was prepared and moderated by the FLEX (Future Leaders Exchange) program graduate Anna Akastyelova who is a long time WOA’s friend and volunteer.
During the session the group was involved into educational activities: reading, translation, answering questions of the moderator. 

The second part of the club’s session was devoted to educational and linguistic desktop card game "Apples to Apples". Players had to learn how to make English phrases using "red apple" cards (which generally feature a noun) and matching "green apple" cards (which contain an adjective) Every player had to choose a strategy to win. The game was both funny and educational for English learners.
Number of participants – 6 persons.

The English idioms – curious and funny !

The "Window on America" center resumed sessions of the "American TEEN club" where students can improve their English skills, learn more about the United States and have a nice time with friends. The session was prepared and moderated by the FLEX (Future Leaders Exchange) program graduate Anna Akastyelova who is a long time WOA’s friend and volunteer.
The focus of attention was on a range of English idioms that might be useful in communication with native speakers. The attention was drawn to the cases where English words resembled Russian words, but had totally different meaning. The group was impressed with the complicated world of set phrases and expressions that exist in English.

English conversations with native speakers

The "Window on America" center resumed sessions of the "American TEEN club" where students can improve their English skills, learn more about the United States and have a nice time with friends. The sessions are prepared and moderated by the FLEX (Future Leaders Exchange) program graduate Anna Akastyelova who is a long time WOA’s friend and volunteer.
Today’s session was attended also by WOA’s American volunteer Mr. Jason. During the session the club members trained their auditing skills (improved skills of English speech comprehension) and exercised their grammar skills. The Club members watched educational videos, answered questions of the online grammar test, and described wonderful paintings by American artist Norman Rockwell. Young people learned more about this talented New York artist who created outstanding landscapes of the American nature.
New knowledge and good mood are the most valuable acquisitions of the American Teen Club members .
