Presentation of WOA’s resources for students

The "Window on America" center (Dnipro / Ukraine) had a presentation of free resources for those wishing to improve their English skills. The presentation was arranged for the third-year students group from the Dnipro National University named after O.Gonchar (DNU).
They listened to the presentation of the helpful library resources for languages’ study and free resources for improving the English skills. Students examined the WOA’s technical equipment, the DOUNB Library’s collection of documents in foreign languages at the respective department, the poster display “Homeland in Exile” and “DOG – America’s favorite pet”.
Students learned about the popular WOA’s activities:
- free access to the digital “eLibrary USA” to prepare academic papers,
- possibility to watch US movies with authentic soundtrack (in a group or individually),
- possibility to meet native speakers at the “Gabfest” English-speaking club sessions,
- “Activate English” course.
The students reviewed the promotional trailer about the library resources and received promotional materials. They were invited to follow the WOA’s announcements via the website, social networks (Facebook), to view reference materials and on-line links to the blog.
Number of participants – 12 persons.

International Translation Day and Fundamentals of Academic Integrity at WOA Dnipro

Today the WOA Dnipro Center was visited by a big group of the 1st year students from the National Metallurgical Academy of Ukraine. Their major is “Technical Translation”.
The group was familiarized with the history of the International Translation Day observance. The information was illustrated with several relevant videos. The display of Dictionaries from WOA’s collection impressed the group and their lecturers as paper-based dictionaries are still popular with translators as a reliable tool.
 

The highlight of the visit was the presence of our US guest – Mrs. Tamara. She works as a professional translator and interpreter in the USA. She shared her experiences with the students and answered their questions about the work of translators in the USA.
This academic year the WOA staff started to familiarize students with the concepts of "plagiarism" and "academic integrity." The Window to America Head Svetlana Usenko presented a slide show aimed to emphasize to the students that knowledge acquisition is hard and independent work they should do on a daily basis. 

Students write scientific papers for different projects, they will need to prepare themselves for the Final University Tests. The ability to distinguish plagiarism from non-plagiarism, familiarity with the quotation rules, and the awareness of the codes of honor in colleges – all these steps will lead today’s University students to a successful career.

Window on America Dnipro and Teachers’ Training


This afternoon the WOA Dnipro center facilitated the first training of the English teachers in the academic year 2017/2018. The Dnipro city Department of Education organized and the DOUNB Library hosted the training for a big group of English teachers from Dnipro city and Dnipro region schools.
The teachers were informed about the mission of the WOA Dnipro. The free resources of the center were promoted and the city schools were urged to cooperate in several WOA’s projects.
 

The teachers enjoyed our new colorful decoration in American style. The installation is made in the shape of the Big Book, on its pages one can see popular US film and cartoon characters who also read, study and plan their successful future!

WOA Dnipro and Training for Ukrainian Librarians

This morning the WOA Dnipro facilitated the DOUNB’s skills up-grade training for regional libraries’ personnel. The WOA’s audio-visual equipment was used for the presentations about the modern methods of library operations.
The WOA Dnipro’s staff member T. Gavryliuk offered to the training participants the WOA’s promotional flyers, presented the new Big Book decoration and the free resources of the WOA Center.
The librarians from the provincial libraries promised to promote the WOA Dnipro among their patrons and partner schools.
Participants number – 27 persons.

DOUNB Library Promo

DOUNB Library Promo for WOA’s resources.
On the main street of Dnipro city in front of the DOUNB Library building the Window on America center staff joined the promotional event for library services. Together with the Ukrainian-Canadian Center colleagues we presented book displays: “Ukraine Speaking” + “Be modern. Read in books in Ukrainian!”
The "Window on America" Librarians reminded the passes-by about the “Year of English in Ukraine” and informed them about free resources for learning English in the library, the clubs and courses offered at WOA.
The Canadian-Ukrainian library center presented the new arrival books by popular Ukrainian authors. The librarians distributed promo flyers, disseminated information about the Express English courses, signed up new readers.
Visitors from Zaporizhye were referred to Zaporizhzhya Regional Scientific Library and WOA Center.

WOA’s INRODUCTION to PAVLOGRAD Students

During the Spring Break visit to Dnipropetrovsk a big group of Pavlograd high school students (school No.5) were invited to visit the WOA Center Dnipropetrovsk.
The WOA staff member T. Gavryliuk introduced to the visitors the “УкраїнаSpeaking” project and the “Window  On America” Center (Dnipropetrovsk) .
 The students were informed about the academic exchange opportunities for school students (FLEX program) and University students (the Fulbright exchange).
The students were invited to follow WOA Dnipropetrovsk Facebook page to keep in touch and be aware of the news.
The positive wrap-up of the presentation was a photo near the book installation about the English Language at the partner library department (the foreign languages division).
Number of participants – 55 students+ 1 teacher.

Spring Break Library Tour

During the school Spring break WOA staff member T. Gavryliuk invited the 6th year students of the local school No.58 for a DOUNB Library Tour. The highlight of the tour was the introduction of the УкраїнаSpeaking project and a brief presentation of the WOA Center and FLEX program for academic exchange of school students. Within the frame work of the “Year of the English Language” initiative the children where familiarized with the book installations and hand-made crafts (dolls and tourist attractions) that introduce the English language at the WOA’s partner department – the department of foreign languages documents.
The other WOA’s partner – the Art department of the DOUNB Library – surprised the students with the book display “The Art of Book Production” and complementing displays: a fascinating collection miniature books and the exhibition of local painters’ art works used as book illustrations.
Number of participants – 20 students+3 teachers.

Future translators

FUTURE TRANSLATORS at Window on America center in #Dnipropetrovsk.
WOA center was visited by a group of 3rd year students of the Dnipropetrovsk Metallurgical Academy with their English lecturer Ms. O. Myrhorodska.  The students major is technical translation.
At the WOA center the students had a practical lesson on translation studies. They had a chance to compare variants of authentic professional (aviation) English dialogue translation into Russian and Ukrainian languages. The lecturer used a film from WOA’s collection to demonstrate the difficulties of auditing and translation of technical terms.
At the end of the session the WOA staff T. Gavryliuk presented to the group the #УкраїнаSpeaking project and the free resources helpful for the translation studies.
Participants – 8 students +1 lecturer.

Guests from Zaporizhzhia

The "Window on America" center (Dnipropetrovsk / Ukraine) had a presentation for the 3rd year students and teachers from the specialized school No.93 from the city of Zaporizhzhia.
The school is focused on the study of English and even primary students demonstrated good knowledge of the US geography and basic historic facts. 
The students and their teachers were informed about the academic exchange program FLEX offered to the Ukrainian students to improve their language skills in the USA.
All the participants of the event were acquainted with the "Window on America" Center and its resources.  The visit to the WOA Center was helpful even to very young English language learners.

A presentation for school students

"Window on America" center (Dnipropetrovsk / Ukraine) had a presentation for school students from Nikopol who wishing to improve their English skills.
The students and their teacher were informed about the funds and resources of the Oblast Scientific Library named after the Slavic apostles Cyril and Methodius.
All the participants of the event were acquainted with the "Window on America" Center. The Center will be useful to all English language learners.

Discover DniproWOA

"Window on America" information and resource center was visited by a group of the 8th year students from the neighboring School №23 with profound study of English. The WOA’s Head presented helpful free library resources for learning and improving the level of English independently.
Students were encouraged to use the WOA’s computers to visit the web-site of the DOUNB library, WOA’s blog and FB-page. Young people examined the WOA’s collections with great interest. They liked everything – collections of books and movies, the display of promotional materials from US colleges and universities "If you want to study in the US", the posters display "America 24/7".
Students learned about the opportunity to use the digital library ‘eLibrary USA’ to prepare academic papers, to watch English movies (in a group and individually), to communicate with native speakers in the speaking club “Gabfest”. The group reviewed the promotional trailer of modern library services, several videos about Chicago and New York, listened to music of the American composer George Gershwin and the youth group Pentatonix.
The 8th graders are still young kids and showed interest in less academic WOA’s articles. They located the shelves of open access table games, instantly learned the rules and had a round of ‘Apples to Apples game’. This game activates the English vocabulary knowledge in a funny way.
 The teacher fixed the date for the next visit: in the WOA’s collection the students found a movie they would like to watch. WOA staff and the students look forward to see each other again very soon.

Discover USA: Washington D.C.

The "Window on America" center (Dnipropetrovsk / Ukraine) had a presentation for those wishing to improve their English skills.
Within the frame work of the “Discover USA” project Window on America Dnipropetrovsk arranged a short session for the school students from the city Novomoskovsk.
School students watched a slide show about the city of Washington D.C. – the capital of the USA.  The WOA’s Head Svitlana who has been to Washington city shared her positive emotions about the trip to the USA.
The presentation covered numerous aspects – the history of the capital, the geography of the area, the beautiful architecture of the city, the capital’s heart – National Mall, wonderful memorials in honor of the US presidents, Library of Congress’s and the White House’s interiors. At the end of the meeting, the students watched a video about the Washington D.C.
Children listened to the presentation of the useful library resources for languages’ study and free resources for improving the English skills too. They examined the WOA’s technical equipment, the books and DVDs collections,  book & image display  “If you want to study in the USA” and paper show “America 24/7”.
The teachers reviewed the promotional trailer about the library resources and received promotional materials.

Presentation of WOA’s resources for lyceum students

The "Window on America" center Dnipropetrovsk was visited by a group of lyceum students. The students were searching the information for a school project.
WOA’s Head Svitlana Usenko told the students about the valuable internet resource - eLibrary USA. She showed the students how to use it, helped them to create a bibliographic document with the search results on the topic "Hobbies / leisure in the USA” that may become the basis for the school project.
Lyceum students learned about the possibility to arrange theme events at the WOA center, to watch the English-language movies (in a group or individually), to communicate with native speakers at the “Gabfest”English-speaking club sessions. The students reviewed the promotional video of the library resources, received promotional flyers for their English teacher.

Presentation of WOA’s resources for librarians



The "Window on America" center (Dnipropetrovsk / Ukraine) had a presentation of free resources for those wishing to improve their English skills. The presentation was arranged for the rural librarians of Dnipropetrovsk oblast. The guests were introduced to the WOA’s technical equipment collection and the book & image display «Be active! Become a tourist!". Colleagues were recommended to keep in touch with the WOA center through social networks, to view the reference materials and on-line reference on the WOA Dnipropetrovsk‘ site and blog.

Resources presentation



Today Information and Resource Center "Window on America" in Dnipropetrovsk was attended by the English teachers from schools of Dnipropetrovsk region.

Head of WOA Center Svitlana Usenko presented the Online resources for teaching English. The presentation familiarized  the teachers with  the American electronic library resource “eLibrary USA Databases”, the electronic portal  “American Online English”,   the phonetics and grammar teaching program by  Rosetta Stone.

The donations by the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine were also introduced – electronic gadgets iPad and Kindle.
All the participants were provided with the opportunity to practice the new devices and to search information on the e-Library. The teachers received the center’s brochure and printed copies of the resources for e-Library and American Online English.
