WOA Dnipro and Training for Ukrainian Librarians

This morning the WOA Dnipro facilitated the DOUNB’s skills up-grade training for regional libraries’ personnel. The WOA’s audio-visual equipment was used for the presentations about the modern methods of library operations.
The WOA Dnipro’s staff member T. Gavryliuk offered to the training participants the WOA’s promotional flyers, presented the new Big Book decoration and the free resources of the WOA Center.
The librarians from the provincial libraries promised to promote the WOA Dnipro among their patrons and partner schools.
Participants number – 27 persons.

Future librarians and International Standards

The "Window on America" Center was visited by the students of the Dnipropetrovsk College for Culture, their major is “Library Science”. The group learned about the DOUNB Library statistics which give the idea about the different aspects of library work and the sources of new book arrivals. The WOA’s staff told the students about the history of the center, its mission, modern types of activities, the types of patrons who participate in various activities that help to learn English.
Students were introduced to the American Library Association (ALA), which is the driving force for the national library network. The ALA became the benchmark for Ukrainian libraries in project development and activities planning. The young people were invited to join the youth section of the Ukrainian Library Association and to learn how to be creative and innovative in a Ukrainian library, how to surprise the world with extraordinary library projects.

Guidelines for Year Of English in Ukraine» events

2016 Year of English in Ukraine events continue!
"Window on America" Head Svitlana Usenko addressed the training course students who were the chief library bibliographers from the Dnipropetrovsk province. In her speech she stressed the need to plan activities in advance, to look for volunteers and language experts to implement the events. She proposed a list of topics that will be appropriate for cultural and educational sessions; recommended the names of famous American writers and artists for library events; described the popular event formats: an English-speaking club, a film screening, a lecture, a presentation, a musical evening, game time, etc. S. Usenko mentioned and promoted a "library bike ride" as an activity that is gaining popularity among library community in Ukraine. Librarians received a compilations of electronic materials produced at the "Window on America" center.
They will help the librarians to prepare activities that will motivate library patrons of all ages to learn English, to improve the language skills of those who’re already studying it intensively.

Future librarians

The "Window on America" center (Dnipropetrovsk / Ukraine) had a presentation of free resources for those wishing to improve their English skills. The presentation was arranged for the first-year students group from the Dnipropetrovsk Culture College. The students’ major was "Library Science".
They listened to the presentation of the useful library resources for languages’ study and free resources for improving the English skills. Students examined the WOA’s technical equipment, the DOUNB Library’s collection of documents in foreign languages at the respective department, the WOA’s  book & image display  "Be active! Become a tourist!".
Students learned about the numerous activities:
-    free access to the digital “eLibrary USA” to prepare scientific papers,
-    possibility to watch US movies with authentic soundtrack  ( in a group or individually),
-    possibility to meet  native speakers at the “Gabfest” English-speaking  club  sessions.
The students reviewed the promotional trailer about the library resources and received promotional materials. They were invited to follow the WOA’s announcements via the website, social networks (Facebook), to view reference materials and on-line links to the blog (http://woadnepr.blogspot.com/).

Presentation of WOA’s resources for librarians



The "Window on America" center (Dnipropetrovsk / Ukraine) had a presentation of free resources for those wishing to improve their English skills. The presentation was arranged for the rural librarians of Dnipropetrovsk oblast. The guests were introduced to the WOA’s technical equipment collection and the book & image display «Be active! Become a tourist!". Colleagues were recommended to keep in touch with the WOA center through social networks, to view the reference materials and on-line reference on the WOA Dnipropetrovsk‘ site and blog.

A Speed TOUR of WOA

A  Speed TOUR of Window on America and Resources Presentation.
In the course of the DOUNB Library tour the WOA center was visited by a group of Dnipropetrovsk province librarians. They attend the skills’ up-grading courses at the DOUNB Training Center for librarians. The group was introduced to the wide range of WOA’s resources for the English language study. The activities most popular  among library patrons were presented to the group -  the theme book displays, weekly movie club and weekly English-speaking clubs for different age groups (for teens and adults).
The group members received the WOA’s promotional materials.

Conference of Librarians

Head of the "Window on America" Center Svitlana Usenko participated in the interagency scientific conference "Library of the XXI century: modern aspects and transformations in the process of building the Information Society" (Dnipropetrovsk, DOUNB Library).
She was a presenter at the conference’s workshop "DOUNB Library in social and cultural infrastructure of the region" with a report "The Window on America” center – the 10th anniversary! Steps to the special status of English in Ukraine." In her presentation she generalized the best practices and achievements of the center’s employees over 10 years of participation in the project of the US Embassy in Ukraine. S. Usenko defined the best ways of working with patrons, demonstrated the photos of the most successful events. The WOA’s Head stressed the importance of studying English, enumerated the current challenges facing the center and once again promoted the Free Resources available to all residents of Dnipropetrovsk region.

Librarians at WOA

Mrs. Marina A.,  the  librarian from a provincial library in Dnipropetrovsk region,  is exploring the materials about the Florida state. She has a special interest in it – her friend has recently moved to this world famous  tourist destination.
The Head of the Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk Svitlana Usenko met the group of  librarians (Dnipropetrovsk district libraries).
She told about the DOUNB library electronic catalog, free resources for learning English and most popular activities of the Window on America center.
She informed the librarians about the free resources available on-line and recommended by the US State Department:
- Rosetta Stone software
- the software Trace Effects
- on-line resources (American Online English, Voice of America The Classroom…) for the English language study recommended by the US State department.
The donated gadgets iPad and Kindle were presented to the audience.
