42 is a 2013 American biographical sports film written and directed by Brian Helgeland about the racial integration of American professional baseball by player Jackie Robinson, who wore jersey number 42 through his Major League career. The film stars Chadwick Boseman as Robinson, and Harrison Ford as Branch Rickey, with Alan Tudyk, Nicole Beharie, Christopher Meloni, Andre Holland, Lucas Black, Hamish Linklater and Ryan Merriman appearing in supporting roles.

Love Actually

This evening the WOA Dnipro's Movie club has big-screened a film Love Actually.
Love Actually is a 2003 Christmas-themed romantic comedy film written and directed by Richard Curtis. It features an ensemble cast, many of whom had worked with Curtis in previous film and television projects. The screenplay delves into different aspects of love as shown through ten separate stories involving a wide variety of individuals, many of whom are shown to be interlinked as their tales progress. Most of the film was filmed on location in London. The story begins five weeks before Christmas and is played out in a weekly countdown until the holiday, followed by an epilogue that takes place one month later.
The film was a box-office success, grossing almost $247 million worldwide on a budget of $45 million.

Jumper

Wednesday Movie Club: Jumper.

This afternoon the WOA’s Movie Club (at Window on America center Dnipro, Ukraine) offered the big-screening of a science fiction film.

Jumper is a 2008 American science fiction action film loosely based on the 1992 science fiction novel of the same name written by Steven Gould. The film is directed by Doug Liman and stars Hayden Christensen, Jamie Bell, Rachel Bilson, Max Thieriot, AnnaSophia Robb, Diane Lane, Michael Rooker, and Samuel L. Jackson. The film follows a young man capable of teleporting as he is chased by a secret society intent on killing him. The script went through a rewrite prior to filming and the roles for the main characters were changed during production. Jumper was filmed in 20 cities in 14 countries between 2006-07. 

The film was released on February 14, 2008 and a soundtrack on February 19. The film held the first position in its opening weekend with $27.3 million, but received generally unfavourable reviews from critics, mostly due to the many changes from Gould's novel, rushed plot and anti-climactic ending.

The Descendants

This Wednesday the Window on America Dnipro's Movie club has big-screened a comedy-drama film.
The Descendants is a 2011 American comedy-drama film directed by Alexander Payne. The screenplay by Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash is based on the novel of the same name by Kaui Hart Hemmings. The film stars George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller, Beau Bridges, Judy Greer, Matthew Lillard and Robert Forster, and was released by Fox Searchlight Pictures in the United States on November 18, 2011 after being screened at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.
Tracing the journey of land baron Matt King who struggles with unexpected occurrences in his monotonous life, The Descendants won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as two Golden Globe Awards for Best Picture – Drama and Best Actor – Drama for Clooney.

Wednesday Movie Club in July: 500 Days of Summer, King Arthur, The Interpreter

on July, 7 - Wednesday Movie Club: 500 Days of Summer.

This afternoon the WOA’s Movie Club (at Window on America center Dnipro, Ukraine ) offered the big-screening of a nice film.
“500 Days of Summer” is a 2009 American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Marc Webb.
The film employs a non-linear narrative structure. It stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. The plot is based upon its male protagonist and his memories of a failed relationship.
The film received favorable reviews and became a successful "sleeper hit", earning over $60 million in worldwide returns, far exceeding its $7.5 million budget. Many critics named the film as one of the best from 2009.

This evening the WOA Dnipro's Movie club has big-screened a film "King Arthur".
King Arthur is a 2004 Irish-British-American historical adventure film directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by David Franzoni. It stars Clive Owen as the title character, Ioan Gruffudd as Lancelot and Keira Knightley as Guinevere.
The film is unusual in reinterpreting Arthur as a Roman officer rather than a medieval knight. Despite these departures from the source material, the Welsh Mabinogion, the producers of the film attempted to market it as a more historically accurate version of the Arthurian legends, supposedly inspired by new archaeological findings. The film was shot in England, Ireland and Wales.

The Interpreter.This Wednesday the Window on America Dnipro's Movie club has big-screened a political thriller.
The Interpreter is a 2005 film directed by Sydney Pollack, starring Nicole Kidman, Sean Penn, Catherine Keener, and Jesper Christensen.
Political intrigue and deception unfold inside the United Nations, where a U.S. Secret Service agent is assigned to investigate an interpreter who overhears an assassination plot.

Martian Child

This afternoon “Wednesday Movie Club” at Window on America center Dnipro, Ukraine had watched a film Martian Child. 
It’s a 2007 American comedy-drama film directed by Menno Meyjes and written by David Gerrold based on his 1994 novelette of the same name. The film stars John Cusack as a science-fiction writer who adopts a strange young boy (Bobby Coleman) who a hyper-imaginative 6-year-old abandoned and socially rejected boy who says he's really from Mars.

Noah

The “Wednesday Movie Club” at Window on America center Dnipro, Ukraine had watched Noah.
Noah is a 2014 American epic biblical drama film co-written and directed by Darren Aronofsky, written by Ari Handel, and inspired by the story of Noah's Ark from the Book of Genesis. The film stars Russell Crowe as Noah, along with Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson, Ray Winstone, Logan Lerman, Douglas Booth and Anthony Hopkins. The film was released in North American theaters on March 28, 2014, in 2D and IMAX, while several countries released a version of the film converted to 3D and IMAX 3D.
Noah received generally positive reviews from critics and grossed over $362 million worldwide, but generated controversy with audiences
Plot: A man is chosen by his world's creator to undertake a momentous mission before an apocalyptic flood cleanses the world.
The film features a musical score by Oscar-winning composer John Williams.

L.A. Confidential

At the Window on America center in Dnipro (Ukraine) L.A. Confidential (1997) was presented to all who wish to improve their language skills.
L.A. Confidential is a 1997 American neo-noir crime film directed, produced and co-written by Curtis Hanson. The screenplay by Hanson and Brian Helgeland is loosely based on James Ellroy's 1990 novel of the same name, the third book in his L.A. Quartet series. Like the book, the film tells the story of a group of LAPD officers in 1953, and the intersection of police corruption and Hollywood celebrity. The title refers to the 1950s scandal magazine Confidential, portrayed in the film as Hush-Hush.
At the time, Australian actor Guy Pearce and New Zealand actor Russell Crowe were relatively unknown in North America, and one of the film's backers, Peter Dennett, was worried about the lack of established stars in the lead roles. However, he supported Hanson's casting decisions and this gave the director the confidence to approach Kevin Spacey, Kim Basinger, and Danny DeVito.
The film grossed $126 million worldwide and was critically acclaimed, holding a 99% rating at Rotten Tomatoes and an aggregated score of 90 out of 100 on Metacritic. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards, winning two: Basinger for Best Supporting Actress and Hanson and Helgeland for Best Adapted Screenplay; it lost every other category to Titanic. Taxi Driver

Tonight we, the Wednesday Movie Club members (Dnipro Window on America center, Ukraine) offered the big screening of the film “Taxi Driver”.

 “Taxi Driver” (1976) is an American “vigilante” film with “neo-noir” and psychological thriller elements. It was directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Paul Schrader. Set in New York City following the Vietnam War, the film stars Robert De Niro, and features Jodie Foster, Harvey Keitel, Cybill Shepherd, Peter Boyle, and Albert Brooks.

The film is regularly cited by critics, film directors, and audiences alike as one of the greatest films of all time. Nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, it won the Palme d'Or at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival.

The film was considered "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant by the US Library of Congress and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 1994.
The group found some parallels between the US Vietnam veterans and the Ukrainian soldiers from Donbass battles. The happy end of the film surprised quite a few people.

Tortilla Soup

Tonight we, members of the Wednesday Movie club (Dnipro Window on America center, Ukraine) had some newcomers, so we watched Tortilla Soup (2001) as the light romantic comedy and drama movie directed by Maria Ripoll to enjoy and for the newcomers to inspire to come again to improve their English. This movie impressed us in many ways, as there was everything to make us feel tension and happiness, so we can hardly say what we enjoyed more – watching the movie or discussing it, because all the events in the movie developed very quickly and in such unexpected way, that no one left untouched.

“Wednesday Movie Club” at Window on America center Dnipro, Ukraine had watched American Short Story Collection: The Jilting of Granny Weatherall (1980).
Adapted from the short story by acclaimed writer Katherine Anne Porter (Ship of Fools), THE JILTING OF GRANNY WEATHERALL reminds us of the plight of many women who wait for life to claim them, rather than seek life out for themselves.
