Speed English: Environmental Awareness

The English Learners (at Window on America center Dnipro, Ukraine) were engaged into conversation in pairs or small groups. The topic was “Environmental Awareness”.
During the Speed English session the participants had a chance to talk about their recycling practices and the types of the renewable energy they know, the advantages and disadvantages of different energy types.
Participants number – 67 persons.

Meeting Newcomers and Green Thinking

Meeting Newcomers and Green Thinking at WOA Dnipro.

This afternoon the Gabfest English-speaking Club (Dnipro, Ukraine) was visited by a big number of the newcomers. That’s why we started with the introductions of the WOA Dnipro staff members and after that gave the floor to the first timers. The introductions of three different generations highlighted the typical mistakes even in the fluent English speakers. The regular Club members had a chance to ask the newcomers about their background.
 

The official topic of the session wasGreen Thinking. We started with the descriptions and discussions of the eco pictograms and symbols. The challenging task was to watch and comprehend the video about the social responsibility of the US corporations and their investment into the ecological projects.
The session was educational for all generations of Club members.
Participants number – 67 persons.

Speed English at DniproWOA: Environmental & Climate Literacy

This afternoon the Gabfest club session (Dnipro Window on America center, Ukraine) was dedicated to the observance of the UN Mother Earth day.
In the second part of the session the group was offered the “Speed English Game”. The questions for conversation dealt with environmental problems of this country. Our American guests actively joined the conversation and made happy the Club members.
Number of participants – 33 persons.

Earth Day at DniproWOA: Environmental & Climate Literacy

This afternoon the Gabfest club session (Dnipro Window on America center, Ukraine) was dedicated to the observance of the UN Mother Earth day.
Earth Day now gathers over 1 billion people each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.
The theme for 2017 is “Environmental & Climate Literacy”. It aims to empower everyone with the knowledge of climate change in order to inspire action towards environmental protection.
The Club members were urged to make small green changes in their lifestyle:
-    Walk to work, cycle or take public transport
-    Cut back on single use plastics
-    Recycle
-    Go paperless
-    Go meat or dairy free at least once a week
-    Plant a tree
-    Buy local produce.
The group was offered educational videos about the “carbon footprint” and supermarkets’ secrets. The video introduced a lot of environmental terms and explained some “green changes” that were not clear to the session participants.
The discussion that followed engaged our American friends- Mr. Jason and Mr. Stephen and covered some controversial aspects of the climate change theory.

Green Thinking is important!

“Greenpeace” celebrates Birthday”.
The "Window on America" center was visited by a group of sixth graders within the frame work of the partnership project with the local high school № 141. The visit was dedicated to the presentation of the world-famous environmental organization "Greenpeace" that on September 15 celebrates its birthday.
The students watched a You Tube video in English about the history of the Greenpeace organization.
The WOA’s Head Svetlana Usenko presented to the group the most famous environmental protests by “Greenpeace”. 


The children learned many new facts and ecological terms. “Greenpeace”’s mission is the protection of natural resources, energy conservation and use of alternative energy. In Ukraine the Greenpeace activists protest against the import of harmful substances into the country.
The group discussed the video and other images. The children told what they do personally to preserve nature. Besides, they learned more about eco activities that can be done at home with their family members.
Number of participants – 28 (26 – pupils, 2- teachers) persons.

World Environment Day

Today’s session of the Gabfest Club at the "Window on America" Dnipropetrovsk / Ukraine was dedicated to the World Environment Day.
The 2015 theme for World Environment Day (WED) is Sustainable consumption and production. The slogan for the theme is 'Seven Billion Dreams; One Planet; Consume with Care'. We have discussed the WED posters than recommended the following actions to keep the planet clean and safe:
-Eat vegetarian at least once a week
-Fly with an e-ticket
-Telecommute
-Dine in! instead of fast food places with plastic utensils
-Fix leaky pipes
-Recycle old electronic devices
-Rethink bottled water
-Change your light.


The second part of the session was dedicated to a Success story. The Club’s loyal member Yulia shared her story of finding employment abroad and her experience of living and working in another culture. All the club members were grateful for the shared experience and became motivated to improve their spoken English.

RRR: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Today’s session of the English-speaking club "GABFEST" at the information and resource center "Window on America" was devoted to the topic of saving the nature thorough certain consumer’s principles. The session was entitled "RRR: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" and was prepared and presented by the library volunteer Mrs. Laryssa Karnoza. 
Mrs. Laryssa drew the group’s attention to the need of saving natural, the search of alternative resources and modern methods of recycling waste.
The Club members read and translated the relevant text, reviewed relevant video that enriched their vocabulary for the topic. Then they shared their thoughts and produced arguments in support of sustainable economy. 
At the second part of the meeting the introductions ritual took place – the new-comers to the club told the basics about themselves and explained why they decided to join the Gabfest English-speaking Club. 
The meeting was informative and educational, especially for those who were not very much concerned about recycling previously. Together, we have to learned how to save natural resources and to use the latest technology in materials recycling sector.
