After City Day Celebration

Today’s session of the Gabfest Club (Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine) was a free topic session. The club members were encouraged to offer topics that interest them. The first topic offered was the “City Day Celebration”. The club members told about the events they visited and the impressions from these events.

Club member Olga Goncharuk offered another topic for conversation – new IT gadgets. She prepared a small slide show and informed the group about the latest devices offered on the market.

Our Australian guest Mr. Eric joined the session today. This gave the opportunity to ask him more questions about Australia. The conversation was so interesting that after the Gabfest session some activists stayed to talk to Eric for a longer time.

American celebrities on bikes

«WOA's City Day Outdoor Session».
On the occasion of the City Day the Window on America center (Dnipropetrovsk / Ukraine) staff participated in the traditional libraries’ presentation event «A Date with Dnipropetrovsk oblast Libraries» in the Lazar Hloba park.
For the adult visitors of the WOA’s stand the staff offered a photo-quiz "American celebrities on bikes". The images presented cycling celebrities: the US President Barack Obama, the ex-governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger, popular actors Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Angelina Jolie. We hope that such role models are very effective and urge people to choose healthy life style and regular cycling training. And if you have “a healthy morale in a healthy body”, your progress in English study will be faster!

The WOA’s stand attracted Ukrainian military veterans who study English and plan to join the Gabfest English-speaking club. Cossack dancers and college students also tried their luck in the photo-quiz. For young visitors of the library fair WOA Center displayed pop-up books, Disney cartoons puzzles and coloring albums. We reminded the visitors that some popular cartoon characters like books and bikes.

The Library fair for the city residents promoted libraries, had educational value and expanded the awareness about the new library services.
Number of participants – 80 persons.

WOA and City Day 2013

This Saturday Dnipropetrovsk city celebrated its birthday. A lot of community organizations presented their services to the city dwellers. Window on America centre as an integral part of the DOUNB Library took an active part in the cultural fair “Libraries’ crossroad”.
To attract potential visitors we have presented numerous resources of the center: donated iPads and table game “Boggle” improved guests’ phonetics and spelling skills ; Library candies ( with new words attached to them) enriched guests’ English vocabulary.
The WOA’s Speaking Club Chairman Jeff attracted everybody’s attention with his American cowboy outfit. WOA’s Head Svitlana Usenko explained to the young visitors the basic facts about the American cowboys and the US flag. The FLEX Teen Club Leader Ann promoted our stand in a youthful way - skating around with the US Flag.
Our friend Brandon from Peace Corps dropped in to support our efforts in promoting “Window on America” among the community. We hope to have a big influx of visitors to the WOA Centre after the Library Fair.

Dnipropetrovsk City Day

Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk participated in the celebration of the CITY  DAY.

Our facility was engaged in the Fair of the Oblast Libraries in the city’s central  L. Globa  park.
WOA center was represented as a department of the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Universal Scientific Library(DOUNB).
We have informed all the visitors of the center about this event and invited them to participate in the Libraries’ Fair. The fair stand of the WOA was very popular with the fair’s visitors. The top ranking exhibits were – iPad and educational game for children “BOGGLE Jr.”
We have invited our Peace Corp friends to attend the celebration and the Libraries’ Fair. They have explored the exhibits of the DOUNB. The most interesting for them was the local lore department book display about the Dnipropetrovsk city. Dozens of exhibits with the unique photos of the city caught their attention.
The provincial county libraries exhibited books and readers’ art display. The stand with rustic household utensils provided some educational value to our American friends. We had the opportunity to explain to them how cloth was made and ironed in Ukrainian villages two centuries ago.
One of the stands at the Fair allowed us to have some fun and wonderful photos. Our Peace Corp friends looked very nice in traditional Ukrainian garments.

The Libraries’ Fair participation allowed the WOA Centre to promote its activities to a wider audience of the city dwellers.

ON THE ROCKS

Today’s session of the ESC was held in the frame of the CITY DAY celebration and took place ON THE ROCKS of the city’s central Lazar Globa Park.

Before the session started all the club members had a chance to attend the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Libraries’ Fair where the WOA Dnipropetrovsk was represented by a separate stand displaying American electronic gadgets and educational games for children.
The highlight of the session was a visit of the Novomoskovsk English Speaking Club organized by the Peace Corp volunteer Mrs. Joanna Luongo.
After short introductions of the club members from both sides the guests from the town of Novomoskovsk told us about their activities and achievements. The club was named “Open Borders” as it facilitates opening of new horizons to persons who enrich their knowledge with a foreign language.
One of the achievements of the “Open Borders” Club was editing of the English-Russian newsletter for the readers and visitors of the local Library. The Club’s founder Mrs. Joanna Luongo helped the Library to win a grant for computer equipment. The activities of the Peace Corp volunteer Joanna and her Ukrainian counterparts were described in the article of the local newspaper “Visnyk  Prysamarija” (Samara River valley Herald).
To round up the session the Dnipropetrovsk ESC members told the city guests about the founder of the old park - Cossack Lazar Globa - and invited them to make a group photo in front of the L.Hloba monument.
