August, 6 –
Within “Window on America” framework, Oleksandra Myrgorordska continues new project Young speakers’ club – “The Anglo-Grasshoppers”.
Our club for kids is a real success today! We continue to work with children.
As warm up activity, the children played “Futaba”. Easily learnt how to play it. “Futaba” is really a smart game: it does not allow the children to guess the answers by simple lining up the buttons but blocks the child’s touchpad after the first touch. 4 people can play at once. The first who answers correctly by touching his/her touchpad, wins one score. The other 3 players can see the right answer on their touchpads. We expect that “Futaba” brushes up our memory of the words and provokes fast thinking.
Singing rainbow songs and playing rainbow games helped us to learn that two cultures Ukrainian/Russian and English differ not only in the structures of the languages but in the ideas about the world. Just imagine we watch at the same rainbow in the sky but see the different colors: the Ukrainians/Russians consider that the fifth color of rainbow is sky blue, the sixth – blue, the seventh – violet, while the English name them blue, purple and pink respectively.
Several question of 4 corner game allowed us to speak about preferences and activities.
After training with 4 corner game we passed into Speed English. The task for it was to meet a friend and have a conversation with him/her.
With American song “What do you like?” and Line English we were drilling the phrase “I am of different opinion” and discussed the opportunities how the people with different point of view can communicate. At the end of the meeting we gave the small handouts to the mums to learn some phrases with their kids.

The next topic for discussion was the Olympics 2016 host country. The club members remembered what they knew about Brazil. It was not much, so we reviewed the basic facts about Brazil and its tourist attractions.
The most exciting was an Olympic quiz offered on the CNN web site. We tried to answer 18 questions about modern Olympic games. The fun facts we have learned were sometimes unbelievable.

August, 17 – Wednesday Movie Club at Dnipro Window on America center.
Today the Club offered for big-screening a comedy-drama “The Big Chill” (1983).
Movie critic Gary Susman named the film “the Boomer Nostalgia Classic”. He wrote: ”The movie threw all these characters together at the funeral of one of their own, whose mysterious suicide forces them to realize how unfulfilled their lives seem compared to the world-shaking dreams they had as college classmates in the 1960s. They've gone from hippies to yuppies, selling out their ideals and goals with alarming ease and speed. Their weekend reunion brings about some soul-searching and maybe even a little guilt, but by the end …, they've convinced themselves that they're still cool because they still have a spark left of that rebellious, free-love spirit of the Age of Aquarius….The movie also had an impeccable soundtrack of Motown classics and other period hits”.
Number of participants – 14 persons.

August, 18 – Basic English 3.4.

Our list of Ukraine’s achievements included: freedom of speech, political freedoms, freedom of movement, getting rid of nuclear weapon, abolishing of capital punishment, de-communization laws and nationwide change of communism era toponyms.
The most colorful Ukraine’s anniversary posters in English were produced by Ukrainian communities in Australia. They even issued a stamp to commemorate the date. So for the second part of the session the floor was given to Mr. Eric to tell some fun facts about Australia.

Columbus Day Celebration in the USA

Today’s session of the Gabfest Club (Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine) was dedicated to the topic “Columbus Day Celebration in the USA”.
The group was offered a video about the controversial impact the Christopher Columbus’s voyages had on the indigenous people of the New World and the population of the European countries. However, this holiday continues to be an important way for all Americans to learn more about the Age of Exploration and the enormous transformations it provoked.
The Ukrainian members of the Club were asked to provide examples from the Ukrainian history when the same person is a hero for one social group and a villain for another social group. The most obvious example was the Stalin’s Cult of Personality.
The Gabfest’s Australian volunteer Mr. Eric told the basic things about the discovery of Australia and compared the stories of James Cook and Christopher Columbus.

Ukraine in the English language literature

Today’s session of the GABFEST speaking Club (at Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine) was full of different activities and events.
The official topic of the session was “Ukraine in the English language literature”. The Club’s speaker T. Gavryliuk   presented modern fiction books where Ukraine and Ukrainians were mentioned and described – J.Safran Foer’s “Everything Illuminated” and M. Lewicka’s “The short history of tractors in Ukrainian”. Both books are funny in black humor style and portray Ukrainian immigrants and post-Soviet Ukraine in rather controversial sarcastic manner.
In Australia Ukraine appeared in a book of a different genre. The Sydney-based writer with Ukrainian roots John Hughes had success in 2004 with a family memoir, The Idea of Home, which went on to win several important literary awards. “The Idea of Home: Autobiographical Essays” won both the National Biography Award and the NSW Premier's Award for Non Fiction.
The National Biography Award, established in Australia in 1996, is awarded for the best published work of biographical or autobiographical writing by an Australian. It aims "to encourage the highest standards of writing biography and autobiography and to promote public interest in those genres".
Its administration was taken over by the State Library of New South Wales in 1998.
For today’s session John Hughes was kind enough to participate in a video conference with the Ukrainian audience. He told us about the history of the book’s creation. The club members asked him numerous questions about his Ukrainian family and his life in Australia.
The club member Ksenia has read to Mr.Hughes an English translation of a classical Ukrainian poem by Taras Shevchenko. This poem is the quintessence of the Ukrainian “Idea of home”. Mrs. Ludmilla has read the same poem in its original version – “Садок вишневий коло хати…». The Australian author has highly appreciated the translated poem and the sound of Ukrainian language he remembers since childhood.
The Club thanks the writer for an enjoyable conversation and looks forward to receive a gift from the Australian publisher “Giramondo”. The owner of this publishing house, Dr. Ivor Indyk, is a professor of literature, a formidable critic, a publisher of important books and an arbiter of Australian letters, someone who knows, and is known by, everybody in the Australian literary world. As a child of foreigners in Australia, Dr. Indyk has developed an ear for the nuances of language and special interest in migrant voices.
In the second part of the session we talked to our American friends. The PCV team shared with us information about their numerous projects in Dnipropetrovsk and other interesting things. Mr. Joseph took great interest in a collection of Ukrainian classical authors translated into English which were on display during the session.
The session was very educational and has a great success with the Club members.
Participants – 31 persons.

The guests from Australia

Today the Speaking Club at Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk had guests from Australia who will most likely become our good friends in the future.
Mr. Eric Kneller and his Ukrainian wife Irina   plan to deliver to the club members several lectures about their home country.
In the first lecture Mr. Eric reminded the basic information about Australia – its location, population, number of states, etc. The colorful pictures of the nature and animals illustrated the narration and triggered numerous questions from the participants.
Besides, Mr. Kneller demonstrated typical Australian souvenirs – a kangaroo toy, a boomerang and a cricket set (a bat and a ball). After the America Days the club members know more about the American baseball. Today they learned about the common and different things between cricket and baseball.
The guest also demonstrated the national coins of Australia and explained some unknown facts about the animals from the Australia’s coat of arms. The Kangaroo and the Emu were chosen for the coat of arms because these animals cannot move backwards.
The guests told us basic information about their home town – New Castle (NSW) which is one of the biggest cities in Australia. The Club members had an opportunity to listen to the Australian variant of the English language and train their auditing skills.
The session was a very educational event and we look forward to meet Eric and Irina next weekend.
The number of visitors – 16 persons.
