BOOK GIFT No.2 FROM CALIFORNIA.
Our American friends Maryna Kolodiazhnaya and Mr. Glen Worthy  donated  the  second load of books to the Window on America Center Dnipro.
Part of the load is donation from the Stanford University Library.
The rest of the donation  is a collection of best-selling and literary prize-winning books and a comparatively  fresh issue of the New York Times.

A book gift from CALIFORNIA

Window on America (‪#‎Dnipropetrovsk‬, ‪#‎Ukraine‬) had a spring surprise from the American colleague – a parcel with wonderful books and newspapers.‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬
Ms. Marina is a Ukrainian American working at one of ‪#‎Stanford‬ University Libraries. She and WOA (Dnipropetrovsk) staff member Ms. Tamara are alumni of Dnipropetrovsk National University's English Language department.‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬
Ms. Marina was a facilitator in the process of books donation by Stanford University Libraries to a worthy donor. Today WOA Dnipropetrovsk has received the first parcel with ‪#‎books‬. The highlight of the parcel with great books was fresh issues of "The New Yorker" and "The New York Times".‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Book display We are ‘mountain lovers’

To observe the International Mountain Day (December, 11) Window on America" center Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine presented the book and image display We are ‘mountain lovers’.
The United States has three major mountain chains: The Appalachian Mountains, The Rocky Mountains, and The Sierra Nevada & Cascade Mountains. These mountains are located in the east, central west, and western United States.
The displayed sources will inform you about the touristic attractions in the mountains and popular ski resorts in the USA, and about Red Rocks and Mount Rushmore.
If you are interested in geography and tourism of the USA – come and find more details about the signature rocks and stone monuments of the USA! All US mountain chains are unique, with their own personality and beauty to enjoy.
The Appalachian Mountains are not tall mountains compared to many other mountain chains, but they are old mountains. Although the Appalachians are one long continuous chain of mountains, different people call these mountains by different names depending where they live. In the state of Virginia these mountains are called the ‘Blue Ridge Mountains,’ in New York they are called the ‘Catskills,’ in Vermont they are called the ‘Green Mountains,’ and in New Hampshire they are called the ‘White Mountains’. 
The Rocky Mountains, or simply the ‘Rockies’, are found west of the Mississippi River, there are many impressive and tall mountains in this chain.
The Sierra Nevada & Cascade Mountains hug the entire west coast of the United States.
The Sierras, which start in southern California, are known for their beauty. The Cascade Mountain range stretches from northern California into the states of Oregon and Washington, and on into Canada. All of these are volcanic mountains.

«Бібліотек@ - стратегія розвитку»

Керівник інформаційно-ресурсного центру «Вікно в Америку» Світлана Усенко за підтримки Посольства США в Україні брала участь у VI-му Львівському бібліотечному форумі «Бібліотек@ - стратегія розвитку», який відбувся одночасно із 22-м Форумом видавців всієї України.
Читальна зала Наукової бібліотеки Львівського національного університету ім.Івана Франка зібрала більше 250 директорів та провідних спеціалістів публічних, наукових та спеціальних бібліотек всієї України, щоб обговорити та прийняти стратегію розвитку бібліотечної справи в Україні.

В межах форуму бібліотечна спільнота мала змогу зустрітися з представниками Міністерства культури України, Української бібліотечної асоціації, народними депутатами, науковцями, німецькими, литовськими і польськими бібліотекарями. На прикладі розвитку бібліотечної мережі саме цих країн будувалася стратегія розвитку і українських книгозбірень.
Усі запропоновані рецепти по реформуванню бібліотечної справи буде збалансовано в одному документі, у Стратегії розвитку бібліотечної справи до 2025 року.
Залишилося яскраве враження від лекції «Природа сучасної стратегії» від Олександра Саврука, кад. екон. наук, декана Києво-Могилянської Бізнес Школи. Те, що він розповідав, вразило новизною і незвичністю ідей.
“У бібліотеки немає границі фізичної, вона не обмежується приміщенням. Змінивши границі – Ви отримаєте іншу логіку”.
“Примітивно “змінити людей”, необхідно шукати людей, які змінять систему”. 

 

Для керівників центрів «Вікно в Америку» відбувся тренінг по роботі з SMART-дошкою, вони познайомилися з кращими прикладами реклами книги у соціальних мережах (взаємодія бібліотеки і видавництв), брали участь у відкритій дискусії «Книга і бібліотека у житті українських та американських військових, їх познайомили з перекладами американської літератури, подарували книгу Марка Дж.Конверсіно «Спільна війна: Провал операції «Френтік» 1944-1945», яку тепер треба гідно презентувати українським читачам.
 

Було цікаво і корисно довідатися від заст. директора Мюнхенської міської бібліотеки як розробляли стратегію і реалізували проект «Up Date», головною метою якого було залучення до бібліотеки підлітків. Цифри і факти приголомшили слухачів. Маємо надію реалізувати щось подібне у власній бібліотеці.
 

Як завжди вразила кількість пересічних людей на Книжковому форумі, які приходили туди у пошуках книжкових новинок і задля зустрічей з письменниками.

Love of Reading

Today’s session of the Gabfest Club in Window on America Dnipropetrovsk was dedicated to the St. Valentine’s Day. But we decided to focus on the topic of “Love of Reading”. We have read and translated 20+ reasons to read; we translated several quotes about the importance of reading. The highlight of the official part was the video about the history of books. It allowed the group to enrich vocabulary and introduce the terms important for the topic. The DOUNB library collection allowed to illustrate the terms from the book video – kids’ book could be pop-up, plastic, with cardboard pages, with 3D effect, with puzzle elements, accordion style, etc. The video on comparative reading motivated the club members to read books in pairs according to different criteria – original/translation, one event described by different people and others. The club members shared the stories about the books they read in a challenging genre - biography. It turned out that almost everyone managed to read biographies not only for school projects, but for educational purposes.
 

The conversation was complemented with a book display “Be my Valentine!” from the DOUNB Library resources.
The second part of the session was an informal conversation with our American guest Mr. Brian. The group focused on the importance of pronunciation for the language students. We laughed at funny stories from Brian, the club members told him fun facts about different versions of the Russian language he studies.
The session was a chance for all to express their love to reading and library.
Number of participants – 27 persons.

American Cinema

Within the framework of the “U.S. Art Residence” project the WOA Center  Dnipropetrovsk presented a book display  “American Cinema”.
The display is compiled from the  books in English, Ukrainian and Russian from three departments of the DOUNB library: Window on America, Art Department and Foreign Literature department.
The focus of the display is on the iconic Hollywood actors of the XX century who are popular in Ukraine. All the fans of the movies and regular visitors will be able to discover new facts about   the integral part of the American culture – the American cinema.

Book donation

Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine received a donation of authentic English language books from the active Gabfest club member Artem. We are grateful to Artem and his family for this gift.
We hope it will provide new opportunities to the WOA's patrons. The advanced learners will enjoy the reading of best-selling books. The beginners will be able to find solutions to their grammar problems in old bi-lingual grammar textbooks.
Artem's family donated a load of Russian books to the Cross-booking project at the Library's Fiction department. We hope that Cross-booking fans will be happy with the new reading.

«Library – an extra learning opportunity» - 6

Today, NMetAU students and their teacher Aleksandra Myrgorodskaya visited our center for presentation “The 180th anniversary of the DOUNB Library”. From their words, this experience is useful.  The information they heard enlarges the outlook and contributes to the development of the professional skills (city guiding, for example). 
After the presentation, the students were shown the new books and facilities useful for the professional field (English teaching for young learners, entering foreign institution of higher education, opportunities for TOEFL examination passing). Among the most useful means the following items were recognized: “Activate: Games for learning American English” and “English: Living Language, complete edition”.
