Today’s session of the Gabfest Club (Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine) focused on the topic “OSCAR Awards 2016”.
To break the ice we started to enumerate the basic words that are associated with watching the movies: film reel, movie theater, pop-corn bag and others. The group was familiarized with the DOUNB Library books that provide information about American actors and movie industry. But the most valuable resource was the WOA’s book “The Art of Watching Movies” that introduced the numerous aspects and terms used for a film analysis.
In the second part of the session the club members were offered the materials from the official Oscar Ceremony site. We learned the names of the nominations and the winners in each nomination. The videos that illustrated the topic provided the insight into what were the best and the worst moments in the Oscar show 2016.
In the final part of the session the club members explained to our American volunteer Mr. Jason why they are so fond of American movies.
The session was a” full house” and explained several cross-cultural issues to the participants.

Within the framework of the “U.S. Art Residence in Dnipropetrovsk” project the Window on America Dnipropetrovsk organized a session for the members of the Gabfest Speaking Club that was dedicated to the American cinematograph.
The highlight of the session was the screening of the video “A timeline of the Cinema”. The group learned a lot of interesting facts about the history of the American movie industry. The new vocabulary introduced in the video facilitates the conversation about the movies. The group got a glimpse of the American business models that created the studio system and movie star systems.
The second part of the session was dedicated to the discourse about favorite American actors and directors. It turned out that the majority of the club members do not idolize movie actors and often do not remember their names as they focus on the narrative as a rule. However, a big group of the male club members named Angelina Jolly as their favorite movie star. The film directors popular among the Gabfest club members are Coppola, Tarantino and Cameron.
The session was educational as it incorporated comparison of the American and European movie models.

Within the framework of the “U.S. Art Residence” project the WOA Center Dnipropetrovsk presented a book display “American Cinema”.
The display is compiled from the books in English, Ukrainian and Russian from three departments of the DOUNB library: Window on America, Art Department and Foreign Literature department.
The focus of the display is on the iconic Hollywood actors of the XX century who are popular in Ukraine. All the fans of the movies and regular visitors will be able to discover new facts about the integral part of the American culture – the American cinema.
Today’s session of the Gabfest Club Club (at Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine) was dedicated to the topic “The Movies”. This kind of entertainment is a popular activity during winter holidays.
We have watched several YouTube videos introducing the evolution of the American movies. After that the club members answered numerous questions about their favorite genres of movies, directors and actors. Not all club members are well informed about the cult American movies and actors. The WOA’s collection of America’s best movies was re-introduced to the group as a wonderful tool to learn more about American movie culture.
The topic was a good opportunity for some club members to demonstrate their knowledge about the world famous Ukrainian movie directors and young actresses (Mila Jovovich, Mila Kunis, Olga Kurilenko) .
The second part of the session was dedicated to the introduction ritual. The new comers had a chance to present themselves to the group and meet the regular club members.
The session was very educational.
