PRESIDENTS’ Day at WOA Dnipro

This afternoon the Gabfest Club (Window on America center in Dnipro, Ukraine) was dedicated to the Federal holiday that pays tribute to US leaders. We have watched a VOA video editorial and felt the importance of the holiday to the American nation.
As a fun fact presentation we read and translated several articles about the US former presidents and the   incomes they earn after the presidency.
The second part of the session was dedicated to the guest speaker and her success story. Mrs. Iryna has graduated from the WOA’s Basic English course and spend two months in western India backpacking. It was her first trip abroad. She survived and fell in love with India. Her basic English skills   proved to be useful in Deli and other places.
The session was very diverse and educational for club members.
Participants number – 45 persons.

U.S. Presidents’ Day quiz

The Dnipro Window on America center (Ukraine) was visited by a group of the 7th grade students from the local school No.141 (with focus on English study).
The WOA’s Head S. Usenko briefed the group on the history of the center and presented its resources. The official part of the meeting was dedicated to the President’s Day holiday in the USA. We decided to start with a Presidential Quiz from the Share America resource. The group managed to answer all questions correctly. Mr. Usenko told the group about her trip to the USA and illustrated the story with a slide show about Washington (DC) – the capital of the USA.
The auditing skills of the students were challenged by the YouTube video which presented the biography of the president D. Trump.

The students and the teachers enjoyed the visit and found it very educational.
Participant numbers – 23 persons.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Birthday

To observe the anniversary of the 32nd US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the US President's Day the Window on America Center (Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine) presented to the patrons a book and portrait display 'Franklin Delano Roosevelt’.
A democrat and an outstanding personality, he is the only US President who was elected for four presidential terms. F. Roosevelt became president during the Great Depression in the USA. He started major industrial projects to revive the US economy and to reform social programs. These actions made him very popular among the US population.
Books and illustrations from the WOA’s collection show FDR in the family circle. His wife Eleanor Roosevelt was a very socially active First Lady. She encouraged her husband to build a political career, helped him to overcome illness and was always engaged in charity.

Presidents’ Day

This Saturday the official part of the Gabfest Club’s session (Window on America center Dnipropetreovsk, Ukraine) was dedicated to the President’s Day holiday in the USA. We decided to start the discussion with a slide show about the city of Washington – the capital of the USA.

The WOA’s Head Svitlana U. who has been to Washington city shared her the positive emotions about the trip to the USA. The Club members had to read and translate the text on the slides and comment the images on the slides. The focus of our discussion this time was on the architecture of the buildings and the interiors of the world-known sites – the White House, the Library of Congress, the Supreme Court building.
Several books presented to the club members aroused a lot of interest. The WOA’s collection features books on many aspects of American presidency – today we introduced the books written by the President Barak Obama. To illustrate the “Audacity of Hope” book a video with the famous speech was presented to the group and discussed afterwards.
Once the official part was over the club members spent some time in a conversation about the Chinese New Year celebration. The club members were asked to tell about the animals that symbolize their year of birth and the practices consistent with the year sign. The new-comers were given the task to prepare introduction speeches for the next session.
Participants number – 23 persons.
