Today’s session of the Gabfest Club (at Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine) was dedicated to the International Day of Democracy that is observed by the UN on September, 15.
Democracy is a universal value based on the freely expressed will of people to determine their own political, economic, social and cultural systems and their full participation in all aspects of their lives. The subject of this year's theme – Strengthening Voices for Democracy – aims to shine a spotlight on the importance of people's voices, both expressed directly and through their elected representatives, in today's political, economic, social, developmental, environmental and technological debates. The ability of people to raise their voices and decide how they are governed lies at the heart of democracy. The Book display on American democracy was presented to the participants of the session.
We had American guests - Peace Corp volunteers Mr. Brandon and Mr. Andrew. The newcomers to the Club were told about the Peace Corp organization and its activities in the world and in Ukraine in particular. The volunteers told about their projects in Dnipropetrovsk. They also introduced their home states to the new comers. The group of youth who joined the Club this Saturday was impressed by the encounter with native speaking Americans and the noble tasks of their mission in Ukraine.
The session was educational and enjoyable for all the participants.
Participants - 17 persons.
