For International Day of People with Disability

Today’s session of the GABFEST speaking club (at Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine) was dedicated to the International Day of Persons with Disabilities which is celebrated globally on December, 3.  This year’s theme is: “Break Barriers, Open Doors: for an inclusive society and development for all”. A major focus of the Day is practical and concrete action to include disability in all aspects of development, as well as to further the participation of persons with disabilities in social life and development on the basis of equality.
At the WOA premises a collection of relevant posters was showcased. The posters tell about the life of disabled people in the USA.
 
The session started with the demonstration of a Ukrainian weekly TV program for disabled people. The club members practiced their interpreting skills - they rendered the program’s content into English for our American visitor- Mr. Andrew from PCV.
Mr. Andrew presented a slideshow about arrangements for disabled people in the USA. The club members were able to compare the arrangements for disabled people in Ukraine and USA.
The next challenging task was to tell their own stories about communicating with and helping disabled people. Some stories were very dramatic and impressed the audience.
Today’s session helped to promote Ukrainian public awareness about obstacles in implementing disability-sensitive policies. Certain progress in this matter in Ukraine was also highlighted.

Christmas is coming!

Meets at the informational-resourses center "Window on America" of an "American Teen Club" continues! 
The volunteers are two Alumni of the FLEX(Future Leader's Exchange), Dasha Gerasimova and Anna Akastyelova. The recent one's meet theme was: Winter already came-getting ready for Christmas!
 Moderators introduces some English idioms and phrases related to this thematic such as:
black ice - небезпека у справах
whiteout - стати невидимим
pure as the driven snow - невинний
put something on ice – перечекати
snowedunder– засипало, навалилося
Club member have played a visuality-developing game and performed with a small skits. The first one was a decorating of a Christmas tree, and the second one was a harder one to guess- skit about a "Сhristmas Eve".

There also was a new game intoduced, known as a one of the favourites in America, "Scrabble": create your words, count your letters,cross your findings.
After this game attention of the members was all on the quiz-board game "Christmas tasks", where in order to move on the game's board you have to show your knowledge and use a lexical baggage. The winner was Sveta and she was awarded with a candy-case of an American president.
At the end of the games, team members followed the vital winter activity- drinking hot tea when it is cold outside.

Ability not Disability

For the International Day of people with disabilities the WOA Dnipropetrovsk presented a poster display about disabled people in the USA. 

The poster collection informs the Ukrainian public about the importance of disabled people support, the necessity to integrate them into active social life, political and economical activity, cultural events, etc.

A Place in the Sun

“Wednesday Movie Club” at Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine .
Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine offered screening of the film A Place in the Sun (1951) with Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor starring.

The movie is based on the T. Dreiser’s novel “The American Tragedy”. The club members followed the plot with great interest.

After the screening the club members had an emotional discussion about the film.
