Mixed Four Corner Game

Today we applied unconventional framework techniques and did the speaking activity with 45 children (7-9 age range)!!! 45 children sounds terrifying even for a conventional class but the summer camp leaders (we invited summer camp scouts) said “all THREE scout unions at one time or none”.

Started with WARM-UP. We played “noise” and “silence” game and “clap hands or stamp feet” while watching video about animals and pets – a kind of introduction to stand-up English. We show with our activities that the participants are not obliged to sit.
Then, we played FOUR CORNERS and watched funny video cartoons after each set of four corner game, trying to involve children in dancing and singing along with the video. Some attempts were very successful!!! Some of the children are shy to put up hands and move but the main rule of this work is “NO ANY FORCI!!!”

How do you find a shark as a pet? Let’s see how a shark family lives! Famous American SHARK SONG breaks the ice and stimulates to move!

We will confess. In each corner we had a facilitator to support childeren’s activity in the corners. And the microphone helped a lot! The child’s desire to be heard loudly with a microphone did its job. Even the shiest ones wanted public speaking. We gave microphone to the children to pass it to each other. The summer camp leaders were very afraid that the children would destroy it. Ha-ha! They tried to take it away from the children!

As we do not do streaming per English speaking skills and never have prior testing, we expect the participants with various levels of English. For everybody’s understanding, we developed the slide show for FOUR CORNER game. If poor listening or lack of attention, reading will help and the friend standing nearby. You are welcome to use our slide show. It covers a small number of questions but some activities children ask to repeat again and it takes about an hour to complete the total game.

June, 15 - Mixed Four Corner Game Again!
We continue working with summer camp.  Two of our yesterday’s young visitors decided to join the different group and do the same activity again!
Reduction in the number of young players had certainly a positive effect. We are happy that the summer camp leaders started to follow our advices to us!  Children could better listen to each other and we managed to reach even the youngest and the shiest.
We had more space for dancing and singing!
Our two yesterday’s visitor became the insiders in the corner games. I they facilitated speaking in the corners better than the adults! “I speak good English, I can be a leader,” – said a little girl coming to me.

The Head of WOA Dnipropetrovsk Svitlana Usenko was invited to visit the summer camp at the local secondary school # 39.  S. Usenko organized several gaming hours for three groups of children. Each session was started with the introduction of the DOUNB Library and the Window on America Center with their resources for the English language study.

The time spent at the school # 39 by the WOA representative brought some fun and knowledge to the kids attending at the summer camp.
Number of participants – 60 (aged 8-11).
