Through the month May – Iryna Kanischeva’s photo exhibition "Stinopys: streets of the USA".Street art is like an illusion – it may disappear very soon after its creation. Photographer Iryna Kanischeva started to document the streets to save the artists’ ideas. She traveled around the United States, spotted murals in every town she visited, sometimes getting into dangerous neighborhoods or climbing over fences.
Iryna photographed the scenes of murals creation to draw the viewer's attention to detail, the complexity and beauty of the process, diversity of street art styles and techniques. The exhibited photos reveal the process of public art creation in the United States.
As a photographer, Irina has published numerous publications on monumental art in Gainesville (USA) and Kyiv (Ukraine). She has collaborated with famous international Internet resources. Additionally, Iryna is the chief editor and photographer at GNVUrbanArt.com. This online resources provides news about mural art events in Gainesville.
Photos by Iryna Kanischeva are presented as part of the " Gallery-On- the-Go" project by the America House in Kyiv.
The Ukrainian wall art can compete with the American murals as its ideas are unique and painters are very skillful.

In celebration of Jewish-American Heritage Month, the Window on America center in Dnipro, Ukraine, has presented a book & image display Jewish-American Heritage Month.
The books are complemented with the pictures of the famous Jewish Americans:
Elie Wiesel – writer, professor, political activist, Nobel Laureate, and Holocaust survivor.
Menachem Mendel Schneerson – the leader of the Hasidic group that almost came to an end with the Holocaust and transformed it into one of the most influential movements in religious world Jewry.
Emma Goldman is one of the most important figures in the history of anarchism.
Albert Einstein is a theoretical physicist who developed the theory of relativity, one of the two pillars of modern physics.
Irving Вerlin is a composer who wrote an estimated 1,500 songs, including the scores for 20 original Broadway shows and 15 original Hollywood films.
Leonard Bernstein is a composer, conductor, author, music lecturer, and pianist.
Barbra Streisand and Woody Allen – popular actors.
Steven Spielberg one of the most popular directors and producers in film history.
Philip Roth and Isaac Asimov popular American novelists.

Through the month May – American Motives in Ukrainian Embroidery.
Ms. Ludmyla Skachkova was born and lives in the city of Dnipro. In the 1990s, she visited an exhibition of embroidered pictures. Ludmyla was very impressed with the skillfully embroidered small and large flowering canvases.
Embroidery became Ludmila’s hobby. She started with small and simple works. As she became a skillful master of needle she turned to big themed works: images of people and animals, portraits of celebrities.
The embroidery technique Ludmyla uses is crewel – a type of surface embroidery using wool. Several of Ludmyla’s pictures have "American" theme. One picture is a portrait of a Native American in ethnic head gear. The second piece is a Native American girl with a horse. The work is unusual – the horse’s head has the 3D effect.
One of the latest works by the artist is "Portrait of Abraham Lincoln – the President of the United States". This big work demonstrates Ludmyla Skachkova’s high skill, her interest in history and historical characters, the search for new methods for combining colors.
The artwork attracts the attention of Window to America center ‘s patron. The ladies are particularly impressed with Ludmylla’s works as they understands how much time, attention, finger and eye work requires the creation of these bright works.
We are grateful to Ms. Ludmylla for exhibiting her colorful and optimistic works that impress all patrons of the Window to America Center.
In May, the mini-exhibition was viewed by about 250 people. The display of L.Skachkova’s pictures continues.
2 May – «Wednesday Movie Club» / «Кіноклуб по середах» – Mary Poppins.
Wednesday Movie Club” at Window on America center Dnipro (Ukraine) the film Mary Poppins was presented to all who wish to improve their language skills.
Mary Poppins is a 1964 American musical-fantasy film directed by Robert Stevenson and produced by Walt Disney, with songs written and composed by the Sherman Brothers. . The screenplay is based on P. L. Travers's book. The film, which combines live-action and animation, stars Julie Andrews in her feature film debut as Mary Poppins. It received a total of 13 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture – a record for any other film released by Walt Disney Studios – and won five.
In 2013, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Mary Poppins is widely considered to be Walt Disney's crowning live-action achievement, his only film to gain a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars in his lifetime.
Marina, moderator: It was an honor and pleasure to moderate discussion of the movie this time. I had a pleasure to discuss it with the members, who have different levels of English. I tried to activate them - I asked them questions, tried to motivate them to share their opinion with everyone, shared my opinion with them. I can sincerely say that everyone loved it – I can hardly say what club members like most – watch the movie or discuss it. Anyway we did both and enjoyed it.

The library is the sacred place which stands on the path of knowledge.
So Director of Window on America Center Svitlana Usenko met young and adult patrons of the library to help them to walk this path. And the process of entering English language reality started.
The schoolchildren who are members of the WOA’s “Grasshoppers” Club familiarized themselves with presentation of Astronomy Day and answered the question of Dnipro – the Space Capital of Ukraine Quiz. The biggest impression they got watching the video about NASA astronauts in space aboard the International Space Station. But they all were truly excited joining in learning to sing a song “Planets of the Solar System”.
And the members of Start English group were also offered to watch a slide-set “Ukraine – our Motherland” and the text about Dnipro city, so they obtained a great deal of valuable information and learned plenty of new useful vocabulary. We do everything of it and more to be able to tell about the history of our Motherland and show tourist attractions – this is how we are getting ready to meet the guests of Ukraine.

on May, 5 – An easy conversational topic – American food.
This afternoon after a May Day long week-end and on a working Saturday the Gabfest Club (Window on America center, Dnipro, Ukraine) opted for an easy conversational topic about the icon of the American food – the Big Mac hamburger.
This year the iconic burger The Big Mac turns 50 years old. Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, on a sesame-seed bun. It was invented by Michael Delligatti – one of the first people to open a McDonald's franchise.
The Big Mac became an instant hit and cultural phenomenon in the USA. In 1986, The Economist introduced its Big Mac Index, which shows whether a currency is overvalued or undervalued based on the cost of a Big Mac in one country relative to the cost in another.
The group has learned the vocabulary for burger ingredients and watched the illustrative videos about the history of Big Mac.
Some Club members will definitely get themselves a Big Mac this evening.

The topic for the conversational game was “My weekend”. The participants shared their May Day weekend experiences and made plans for future weekends.

She practiced conversational English with the junior students who are members of the WOA’s “Grasshoppers” Club. With “Window to America” Center’s adult patrons Ganna started to learn Present Continues Tense.

on May, 12 – Do you know how to get Carnegie Hall?
The English speaking club Gabfest at the Window on America сenter (Dnipro, Ukraine) is an amazing and perfect place to train the skill of public speaking and presentation.
Mr. Vitaliy gladly accepted invitation to become a moderator of this educational meeting. He prepared and unveiled the topic of life and activities of Andrew Carnegie and his brainchild Carnegie Hall, originally known as Music Hall, later renamed after Carnegie himself and eventually became a property of not only New York City, United States, but the whole musical world. It was interesting for us to learn how he went through stages of his life, how he became a businessman. Especially interesting thing for us to know what inspired him to become famous arts patron, benefactor for many American libraries, a friend for many creative minds. Providing financial support to build a concert hall, in which concerts of symphonic music would be performed, he did not plan to live a mark in history. However, since that time the hall with lovely acoustic, which remains to be unique even nowadays, is waiting for the most talented performers, performance days are scheduled for many years in advance.
And the site of the concert hall will help everyone know the address of the building, its looks and price for tickets and will help to join a tour in this legendary beautifully restored building.
The club members read some texts in English, translated, watched the video, answered the moderator’s questions – this is how they were involved into active discussion of the obtained information.
A loyal longtime friend of the Club Mrs. Oleksandra M. offered us to discuss some interesting quotations of Andrew Carnegie to understand his mindset and understand him as personality. We all agreed that his ideas are currently central nowadays as well, just like hundred years ago.
After the session we had a little friendly tea-party and discussed future plans of collaboration. We are thankful to Mr. Vitaliy for creating atmosphere of ease and inspirational motivation to learn English.

The young and restless visitors once again excited the DOUNB library's silence. Another regular training session for younger schoolchildren (“Grasshoppers” Club) took place at “Window on America” сenter with WOA’s volunteer Anna Motorina. Children still continue to get used to English, but their young teacher continues to grow as a teacher. Sometimes Anna has hard times teaching them new grammar rules and giving them new information. However, they all enjoyed reading, translating, watching video and learning new grammar rules with her help.
Mastering a skill of public speaking is not an easy task, especially for children. But we learn by doing, achieve by pursuing.

on May, 15 – Express English Started: Activate English 9.1. at WOA Dnipro, Ukraine.
«Window on America» Center Dnipro invited civil servants, police officers, students, specialists with higher education, high school students to join a free mass open course «Activate English! 9.0.».
The objective of this library project is to help English learners to discover more facts about the United States and to improve English conversational skills at the DOUNB library under the guidance of mentors who are fluent English speakers.
The local community responded to the invitation. We welcomed all the new students and hope they will have a great time!

16 May – «Wednesday Movie Club» / «Кіноклуб по середах» – Elysium.
On May, 16 – «Wednesday Movie Club» in DniproWOA offered the big screening of the film “Elysium”.
The members of the “Wednesday Movie Club” at Window on America center Dnipro, Ukraine, had watched a Elysium.
Elysium is a 2013 American science fiction film produced, written and directed by Neill Blomkamp. It stars Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Alice Braga, and Sharlto Copley. The film takes place on both a ravaged Earth, and a luxurious space habitat (Stanford torus design) called Elysium. The film itself offers deliberate social commentary which explores political and sociological themes such as immigration, overpopulation, health care, worker exploitation, the justice system, and social class issues.
The film tells about how in the year 2154, the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth. A man takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds.
The warm discussion followed the film watching and touched the different aspects of the film: the actors’ playing, the director’s work, the soundtracks and the lifestyles of the fiction heroes.

A morning surprise at Window on America center in Dnirpo, Ukraine. An American professional Mr. Ramzey on a business trip to Dnipro was accidentally spotted walking past the DOUNB Library event.
Mr.Ramzey and his Ukrainian counterpart Mr. Oleksandr were invited to the WOA’s office for a friendly chat. The American guest was impressed with the scope of WOA’s activities. He told a few things about his home state New Jersey.
We have invited Mr. Ramsey to visit WOA during his next visit to Dnipro. We are also open for all sorts of cooperation with the company he represents in Ukraine.
on May, 17 – Vyshyvanka Day.
The DOUNB Library’s event to observe the Vyshyvanka Day.
Vyshyvanka is the colloquial name for the embroidered shirt in Ukrainian national costume. It is used as a talisman to protect the person wearing it and to tell a story. Embroidery was used in vulnerable places on the garment where evil spirits could potentially enter the body: along the neckline, cuffs, shoulders, back and hem.
Vyshyvanka Day is celebrated on the third Thursday of May. It is intended to unite all Ukrainians over the world, regardless of religion, language they speak or their place of residence. It is a flash mob holiday, which is not attached to any public holiday or feast day. On this day many Ukrainians wear vyshyvankas to demonstrate adherence to the idea of national identity and unity and to show their patriotism. (30 перехожиз)

"Window on America" Dnipro Information and Resource Center has an enthusiastic volunteer Hanna Motorina. She invited the English learners from the «Grass Hoppers Club» to have a virtual trip around countries and continents. They learned and drilled the names for continents, European countries and the inhabitants of these countries.

on May, 19 – Virtual Tour around USA: New Jersey, Florida, Minnesota.
This afternoon the Gabfest Club members (Window on America center, Dnipro, Ukraine) were offered a virtual tour of several American states.
Earlier this week the WOA Dnipro office was visited by an American guest from New Jersey. The group was offered the basic facts about New Jersey and its symbols. The group enjoyed the videos about the state’s tourist attractions and the historical heritage of Princeton.
The second presenter at the session was Mrs. Inga. Her daughter studied in the USA and lives there now. Inga shared with the group the information about the University of Florida and the job opportunities her daughter received after graduation. She told some fun facts about Florida as well.
The third presenter at the Club’s session was a Ukrainian high school student Oleksiy. He has recently received from the state of Minnesota where he spend an academic year as a FLEX program participant. He shared his impressions about the US high school system and the infrastructure of American towns.
The Club members found the information very educational and started to dream about trips to the USA!

on May, 19 – Warm Welcome to the Australian Volunteer.
WOA’s longtime friend Mr. Eric turned up at the Window on America center (Dnipro, Ukraine) this afternoon. He met the new Club members and gave them a chance to practice their introductions.
The regular Club members enjoyed an afternoon tea and a cake with Mr. Eric talking about his long transcontinental flight and stories about Australia.

The “Gabfest” English speaking club members (in DniproWOA) were familiarized with the exhibition of photographs made in the United States of America by a Ukrainian Iryna Kanishcheva. All the photos show how the murals are created. The Club members watched Iryna’s video introduction – she explained why she has selected this topic, and how her life changed when she started to popularize urban art. Mrs. Iryna takes photos of street artists trying to catch their inspiration. We realized that the mural creation process is as fascinating as the finished painting. We have noticed how Iryna plays with a static photo – to add some dynamics to the photo she introduces a live object at the edge of the photo frame - a real plant, or a car, or a passerby.
The group was grateful to the photographer for her bright optimistic works, for nice mood and the pleasure that we had examining Iryna’s images.

Prior to the Grass Hoppers Club session the head of the Information and Resource Center "Window on America" Svitlana Usenko and the Center’s volunteer Hanna Motorina discussed the cooperation plans for the summer period. In June WOA welcomes the summer camps’ students from the neighboring schools. So Hanna's help will be needed.
Today, the Grasshoppers learned that Hanna and Julian participated in a big sport event - INTERPIPE Dnipro Half Marathon. Hanna ran for 5 km, and Julian - for 1 km. They were pleased and inspired by communication with the marathon organizer Mrs. Maryna Filatova, a well-known athlete and the city mayor’s spouse.
Hanna shared her passion for running with the Grass Hoppers Club members. She prepared an interesting task: to study the new vocabulary for the topic "Marathon", to watch a video about the history of marathons and to answer the questions on the video in writing, to draw the favorite sport. All tasks were completed, and the group played a board game in English.

The DOUNB Library and the Window on America Dnipro center offer the library patrons an “Express English” activity that will help them to activate their passive knowledge of the foreign language and to overcome the fear of speaking in English.
Ten two hour- lectures are offered for the participants to improve their conversational skills in pairs.
The professional EFL lecturer T. Gavryliuk combines the lexical exercises with important cross-cultural information that will help the English learners to understand their foreign counterparts better and to avoid awkward situations in communication.

At the beginning of the lesson, the participants introduced themselves to each other.
The second part of the session was dedicated to the phrases which help to talk about one’s HOME.
All the participants found the session educational and helpful.

On May, 23 – «Wednesday Movie Club» / «Кіноклуб по середах»: Grand Canyon.
The members of the “Wednesday Movie Club” at Window on America center Dnipro, Ukraine had watched a drama film Grand Canyon (1991). Director: Lawrence Kasdan.
Plot: Los Angeles is filled with people of all different backgrounds and experiences, and this is true for a group of loosely connected residents. Simon and Mack, the two leaders of the group, live their lives while maintaining an unlikely friendship after Mack encounters a dangerous situation in Simon’s neighborhood. It is through this encounter that so many other people begin to feel the effects of the newly formed friendship. Despite violence, fear, and confusion that is so much a part of the L.A. inner city, these people continue to live life as they always have.
WOA’s patrons enjoyed the warm discussion followed the film watching and touched the different aspects of the film: the actors’ playing, the director’s work, the soundtracks and the lifestyles of the fiction heroes.

Another regular training session for younger schoolchildren (“Grasshoppers” Club) took place at “Window on America” сenter with WOA’s volunteer Anna Motorina.
Our young learners were very hard-working today. They eagerly answered the questions and have learned many new words. Some of them managed to recognize the new lexical material by hearing when the original native-speakers’ records were being played.
We believe we have contributed to young citizens’ overlook broadening by presenting the information on famous marathons.

As a tribute to the Jewish American Heritage Month the WOA’s Gabfest Club (Window on America center in Dnipro, Ukraine) had a presentation about a polemical US novelist Ayn Rand.
Ayn Rand, original name Alissa Zinovievna Rosenbaum, (born 1905, St. Petersburg, Russia – died 1982, New York, U.S.), Russian-born American writer whose commercially successful novels promoting individualism and laissez-faire capitalism were influential among conservatives and libertarians and popular among generations of young people in the United States from the mid-20th century. Upon her arrival in the United States in 1926, she changed her name to Ayn Rand. Despite generally bad reviews, Rand’s novel “The Fountainhead” attracted readers through word of mouth and eventually became a best seller. Rand sold it to Warner Brothers studio and wrote the screenplay for the film, which was released in 1949. Similarly, Rand’s second best seller “Atlas Shrugged” also appealed widely to young people. It appealed to the reader due to extreme romanticism, its accessible and comprehensive philosophy, its rejection of traditional authority and convention, and its implicit invitation to join the ranks of the elite by modeling himself on the story’s hero.
The group read and translated several popular quotes from Rand’s novels. The topic was illustrated with several YouTube videos about the influence of the Rand’s work on modern US politicians and the controversy of her philosophy - objectivism.
In the second part of the session the group had a chance to talk to the WOA’s native-speaking volunteer- Mr. Eric. They asked him a lot of questions about his home country and its culture.
The topic of the session was complicated, but educational.

Today the members of Gabfest Club (Window on America center in Dnipro, Ukraine) had a chance to talk to the WOA’s native-speaking volunteer – Mr. Eric. They asked him a lot of questions about his home country and its culture.
The conversation was friendly and cognitive.
on May, 29 – A Date with the Library: Summer Fun.
With the end of the school year in Dnipro city secondary schools the students have time for additional activities outside the school. Teachers bring groups to the library to get acquainted with rich book collections and to learn something new and interesting about the United States.
"Window on America" сenter (in Dnipro, Ukraine) is happy to continue its project "Discover USA". Today the 6th graders learned about the modern resources of the WOA Center that help to improve the English language proficiency for free.
The students took part in an interactive presentation by WOA’s staff member T.Gavryliuk about fun summer activities of American teens. Students showed good knowledge of English vocabulary and learned new words that can describe American summer fun. Among them- hiking and camping in a tent, stargazing, roller skating, "star" jumps, "ask a neighbor for flour" pranks, etc.
The topic was quite complicated, but also entertaining for our young patrons. Now they won’t have boring summer holidays

on May, 29 – Activate English group 9.3. at Dnipro Window on America center: My House.
The DOUNB Library and the Window on America Dnipro center offer the library patrons an “Express English” activity that will help them to activate their passive knowledge of the foreign language and to overcome the fear of speaking in English.
Ten two hour- lectures are offered for the participants to improve their conversational skills in pairs.
The professional EFL lecturer T. Gavryliuk combines the lexical exercises with important cross-cultural information that will help the English learners to understand their foreign counterparts better and to avoid awkward situations in communication.
The second session of the Activate Group in 2018
At the beginning of the lesson, the participants introduced themselves to each other.
The second part of the session was dedicated to the phrases which help to talk about one’s HOME.
All the participants found the session educational and helpful.

On May, 30 – «Wednesday Movie Club» / «Кіноклуб по середах»: Winter's Tale.
Tonight we were lucky to have a unique event - Lady’s Movie Club, in other words, the members of the Wednesday Movie club were only the women. This extraordinary event gave us the reason to watch a wonderful and amazing movie about love, which saves lives - “Winter’s Tale” – in which fantasy was represented to be a reality, in which miracles happen. We were so fascinated that forgot about our reality and found ourselves involved into this fantasy. The main character, the thief, who fell in love with a rich girl who was seriously ill, tried to help her to live longer, but she died. Some evil spirits tried to kill him, however, he turned out too miraculous and survived, going back to life in hundred years to save a little girl who had cancer. When we watched this part of the movie we were so very touched, because the situation looked desperate. We enjoyed how the director depicted this miracle of a girl resurrecting, after which he was riding a horse to the stars to unite with his loved one and to become a star in the universe.
We think, we understood the message of this movie – we all have love, which allows us to perform our mission and this allows us to become stars.

on May, 31 – Volunteering Thursday.
The library is the sacred place which stands on the path of knowledge.
Volontier of Window on America Center Ganna Motorina met young and adult patrons of the library to help them to walk this path. And the process of entering English language reality started.
The schoolchildren who are members of the WOA’s “Grasshoppers” got watching the movie and try answer the questions.
And the members of Start English group were also offered a great deal of valuable information and learned plenty of new useful vocabulary.
