World Freedom Day

Today’s session of the Gabfest Club (at Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine) was dedicated to the topic «World Freedom Day».
The group had to learn the basic facts about this day observance from the respective Wikipedia article. The Freedom Day in the USA commemorates the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of communist rule in Central and Eastern Europe. It started in 2001 and is celebrated on November 9th.
The translation of the article introduced to the group two major phenomena - the Cold war between the USA and USSR and the Fall of the Berlin wall as a symbol of the Cold War.
The group was offered for auditing several relevant videos. The first video introduced to the younger generation of the Club members such terms as ‘Iron Curtain”, “evil empire”. The role of the president Ronald Reagan in the dissolution of the USSR was formulated.

The second video was about the Malta meeting of the President George W. Bush with Soviet President M. Gorbachev on board the Ukrainian cruise line “Maxim Gorkiy”. We discussed the unusual circumstances of this meeting.
The final video explained many facts about the Berlin Wall - its rise and fall, its impact on Germans and the rest of the world.
To topic was quite complicated, but the club members managed to survive and enrich both their English language and world history skills.
Number of participants – 32 persons.
