Through the
month October - Book Display: Library – the place of genuine
news.
A book display "Library
-the place of genuine news" was launched at WOA Dnipro to celebrate the
National Day of Libraries and the International Week of Media and Information
Literacy.
The book display showcases the
USA’s iconic libraries – the Library of Congress, US President's Library at the
White House, libraries and museums founded by former US presidents.
The book display is
complemented with American souvenirs with Library Symbols and a 3D Model of the
Thomas Jefferson House, which is the main building of the Library of Congress.
This bright and attractive
display will be interesting to all WOA Dnipro visitors. The book display will
be especially useful for those who has mastered English well enough. The
beginners will enjoy the books as well
as some of them are easy reading adapted books.
The Dnipro Window
on America center presented a book & brochure display for the
ambitious patrons who consider study abroad.
The recent
brochures sent by USA universities interested in Ukrainian students provide a
lot of useful information about the study in the USA.
The
Universities offer graduate and postgraduate courses. Their colorful brochures
give details of the courses as well as beautiful images of the campuses in
different states.
All WOA’s
patrons interested in studying in the USA receive advice about the procedures
and the “Education USA” center in Dnipro.
The display reviewed by all visitors of WOA center in October.
October, 2018 – Media and Information Literacy Posters Display.
In order to improve
media literacy of Dnipro city community the "Window on America"
Dnipro arranged colorful posters display.
The posters were
designed by NewseumEd, the Academy of Ukrainian Press, IREX, StopFake.org and
the International Federation of Library Associations.
All posters were
devoted to a major problem: overwhelming
amount of fake news and the need of media users to resist the fake news.
WOA’s individual
patrons and visitors groups examined the posters, read the tips on how to
analyze news, which tools to use.
Teachers and lecturers who brought groups of students to WOA Dnipro
to participate in the
International Week of Media and Information Literacy received photocopies or
electronic versions of the posters to share with colleagues.
The media-literate
community in Dnipro city is growing!
on October, 3 – International
Translation Day at WOA Dnipro.
This morning the WOA Dnipro was
visited by the 1st year students of the National Metallurgical
Academy. The students major is “Technical Translation”. They were familiarized
with the WOA Dnipro resources and activities that help to improve the English
language skills.
The
group was introduced to the web sites of professional translators’
organizations. The work of translators was illustrated with relevant YouTube
videos. The theme of the International Translation Day 2018 is “Translation:
promoting cultural heritage in changing times”. The students were engaged into
the conversation about the cultural heritage of Dnipro city and region.
The highlight of the visit was
the presentation of the films in which translators’/interpreters’ work was
depicted. The most popular of these
films are available at WOA Dnipro as they are included into the collection of
the classical American movies. The students were urges to join the WOA’s Movie
Club to watch and discuss the films.

Comes the Boom.
On October, 3 – «Wednesday Movie Club» in DniproWOA offered the big
screening of the film “Here Comes
the Boom”.
Here Comes
the Boom is a 2012 American comedy film directed by Frank Coraci. The film's
title is taken from the song "Boom" by Christian rock band P.O.D.
It’s a story
about a high school biology teacher who looks to become a successful
mixed-martial arts fighter in an effort to raise money to prevent
extra-curricular activities from being axed at his cash-strapped school.
On October, 6 – World Tourism Day at
WOA Dnipro.
This afternoon
“Gabfest” English-speaking Club (Window on America center in Dnipro, Ukraine) devoted
to the celebration of the World Tourism Day!
This year the theme of
the day was “tourism and the Digital Transformation”. World Tourism Day 2018 is
a unique opportunity to raise awareness on the potential contribution of
digital technologies to sustainable tourism development, while providing a
platform for investment, partnerships and collaboration towards a more
responsible and inclusive tourism sector.
We have watched and
discussed the World Tourism Organization videos created for the occasion.
In the second part of
the session the Club members shared digital elements of their tourist
experiences. The most widely used were digital videos and photos, on-line
booking of tours and tickets. Some remembered the gadgets used during
excursions in museums and for speech translation at events.
We all agreed that
digitalization of tourism industry is inevitable.

October, 6 – Good Bye to WOA Dnipro's Volunteer.
Today's session of the
GABFEST Club (in Dnipro Window on America ) was the last one this year for our Australian
volunteer Mr. Eric. The group gifted him a selection of Dnipro made chocolates
for the long trip home. At the tea afterparty the Club's
regulars wished him and his lovely wife Iryna a safe trip and a soft landing.
We all look forward to
meet Mr. Eric next year!

on October, 9 – Express English Started: Activate English 10.1. at WOA Dnipro,
Ukraine.
«Window on America» Center Dnipro invited civil
servants, police officers, students, specialists with higher education, high
school students to join a free mass open course «Activate English! 10.0.».
The objective of this library project is to help
English learners to discover more facts about the United States and to improve
English conversational skills at the DOUNB library under the guidance of
mentors who are fluent English speakers.
The local
community responded to the invitation. We welcomed all the new students and
hope they will have a great time!

On October, 10 – English to Children Tips.
This afternoon Mrs.
Amylyn Reynolds, the US Embassy Public Diplomacy Officer, visited the WOA
Dnipro.
She and her colleague
Lilia were welcomed by the Window on America Dnipro patrons of different age
groups who work hard to improve their language skills. The participants of the
presentation were involved into the demonstrations of various games that make
learning English a fun activity. The games with our American guest were good
practice for WOADnipro’s patrons.
We all enjoyed the
time spent together. The teachers and other adults who attended the
presentation will actively use the resources recommended by Mrs. A. Reynolds.

“Wednesday Movie Club” at Window
on America center Dnipro (Ukraine) offered screening of the drama film “Two of a Kind (” (1983) to all who wish to improve
their language skills.

October, 13 – Blowing Up fake news
about Global Hunger.
This
afternoon we had a full house at Window on America Dnipro’s Gabfest Club
session.
In
the first part of the session, we gave all the new comers the opportunity to
introduce themselves and welcomed them to our English –speaking Club.
The
official topic of the session was “World Food Day: Building a Zero Hunger
Generation”. On October 16 millions of people around the world will observe
World Food Day. Initiated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the
United Nations (FAO) it is one of the most celebrated days of the UN calendar.
It
is organized to bring awareness to how our changing planet affects food
production and distribution. The group explored how agriculture needs to adapt
to new conditions. We discussed new types of protein sources that will
eventually lead to building a Zero Hunger Generation.
On
a more personal level, we reminded the Club members how they can change simple
daily habits and waste less food. The topic was illustrated with relevant
YouTube videos.
The
Speed English activity topic was “My Summer Tourist Trips”.

on October, 16 – Activate English group 10.2. at Dnipro
Window on America center: My House.
The DOUNB Library and the Window on America Dnipro
center offer the library patrons an “Express English” activity that will help
them to activate their passive knowledge of the foreign language and to
overcome the fear of speaking in English.
Ten two hour- lectures are ffered for the
participants to improve their conversational skills in pairs.
The professional EFL lecturer T. Gavryliuk combines
the lexical exercises with important cross-cultural information that will help
the English learners to understand their foreign counterparts better and to
avoid awkward situations in communication.

At the beginning of the lesson, the participants introduced themselves to
each other.
The
second part of the session was dedicated to the phrases which help to talk
about one’s HOME.
All
the participants found the session educational and helpful.

On October, 17 – Seminar for EFL teachers at WOA
Dnipro.
Window
on America center in Dnipro hosted the seminar for EFL
teachers. EFL teachers from Dnipro city and oblast upgrade their
teaching qualification at Dnipro
Academy for Post-Graduate Education.
The
participants were greeted by the DOUNB Library staff. The teachers were
introduced to the rich DOUNB Library resources, the library’s web site,
eLibrary USA database, online resources for teaching English. "Window to
America" Dnipro was introduced as a valuable resource center; its main
aims were emphasized:

providing information about the United States
-
popularization of US universities
-
English study
-
cultural information about the USA.
The
seminar participants received from WOA Dnipro electronic compilations of
teaching materials that will help them to prepare educational events on vital
topics such as «Academic Integrity Fundamentals" and "Media Literacy.
Fighting Fake News "(Media Literacy).The compilations contained
infographics from the web site “American English at State”, we hope they will
be of great help to the Ukrainian
EFL teachers.
Among
the seminar highlights were tips about using Smart whiteboard in class and
incorporation of cross-cultural elements into English
teaching process. The teachers were familiarized with WOA Dnipro’s collection
of table games that help to learn English. They tried to play “Apple to Apple
“game and “Boggle”.
The EFL teachers were invited to visit the
DOUNB Library and WOA Dnipro during school breaks – to watch a movie, to have
an educational presentation, to have a
round of Speed English . All these activity immerse students into English and
improve their spoken and comprehension skills.
The
teachers were introduced to the DOUNB Library’s collection of EFL periodicals.
Partnership
with Dnipro Academy for Post-Graduate
Education continues, new meetings with Ukrainian teachers of English are
planned.
on October, 17 – Wednesday Movie Club: Jumanji.
This afternoon the Window on America center’s Movie Club (at Window on America
center Dnipro, Ukraine) offered the big-screening of a film Jumanji. Director: Joe Johnston
Plot: When
two kids find and play a magical board game, they release a man trapped for
decades in it and a host of dangers that can only be stopped by finishing the
game.
WOA’s
patrons enjoyed the
warm discussion followed the film watching and touched the different aspects of
the film: the actors’ playing, the director’s work, the soundtracks and the
lifestyles of the fiction heroes.

On October, 20 – World Statistics Day.
This afternoon the Gabfest Club (Window on America
center in Dnipro, Ukraine) had a conversation about the importance of
statistics for the modern societies. The group was familiarized with the UNESCO’s
Institute for Statistics and its major projects. The adoption of the
Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics by the Statistical Commission in
1994 has been a milestone in the codification and the promotion of the basic
values in official statistics. These principles contain and promote such core
values as relevance, impartiality, professional standards and ethics,
accountability and transparency.
The group was engaged in reading and translating
quotes about statistics and the experts who work in data science.
The highlight of the session was the video that
illustrated the topic. Some of them made us laugh. The others explained how fake statistics allow manipulating
people and their choices.
Speed English “Statistics” was in the end of
meeting.

On October, 22 – Meeting with EFL teachers at DANO.
New
group of EFL teachers from Dnipro city and oblast upgrade their teaching
qualification at Dnipro Academy for Post-Graduate Education. The Head of "Window to America"
Dnipro Svitlana Usenko presented the rich DOUNB Library resources, the library’s
web site, eLibrary USA database, online resources for teaching English.

October, 24 – DIVERSITY VISA PRESENTATION at
#DniproWOA.
This afternoon the
Window on America center in Dnipro regular patrons and Dnipro city community
participated in a traditional autumn event – Diversity Visa presentation from
the US Embassy Consular Department. This year the WOADnipro had a guest of
honor – the United States Vice-Consul Mr. Ryan Reynolds.
After the briefing on
DV Lottery procedures the group had a Q&A session with Mr. Reynolds. The
conversation was very informative. All the participants enjoyed the company of
the US diplomat.
Mr. Vice-Consul was
kind enough to attend another library event for school students next door and
greeted them. That greeting made their day.

October 24 – Playing Pollyanna's Glad Game.
Successful creative
collaboration of the library and the general secondary school No 97 goes on.
Fifth-graders of this school visited Information and Resource Center Window on
America. They saw big reading rooms, books on shelves, computers for readers,
present-day equipment for showcases. The Director of the Center Svitlana Usenko
introduced the schoolchildren to the library, showed the video about what one
can find in the library and how they can learn English. The volunteer of the
Center Maryna Repan told the children about the book of a legendary American
writer Eleanor H. Porter – Pollyanna - and gladly recommended them to read by
all means. The main character of this book is an amazing ginger-haired girl
with philosophical outlook on different real-life situations, whose ability to
bring gladness to people created harmony in a small American town. And when
physical hardship fell to her, greateful people of the small town expressed
their love and support to her. The book is available and can be read in English
or in Ukrainian, as we already have two wonderful translations into Ukrainian.
The real surprise for the children was meeting with the real American, who is
probably the first foreigner in their life - Vice Consul of the US Embassy Ryan
Raynolds, who gladly talked to children asked them some simple questions,
advised them to read more books and to do well in school to succeed in the
future!

On October, 27 – Media Literacy for students in Dnipro Window on
America center, Ukraine.
During the International Media Literacy and
Information Week the
NMetAU lecturer Oleksandra Myrgorodska and her students are studying the Window
on America center’s resources.
We
show the students and their lecturer NewseumEd posters
and tell on the importance to have critical thinking concerning the news influencing them.
Many dictionaries
which the professional translators need and the documentary film resources
which describe the historical periods of the feature books they are reading –
all this in the circle of their interest.
We hope the materials
of our “Education in the USA” display help you to make a good choice on your
further education.

On October, 27 – MEDIA LITERACY Basics.
This
afternoon the Gabfest Club members paid tribute to the Global Media Literacy
Week and talked about Media literacy skills that are very important in the 21st
century.
The
focus of the conversation was on the term “Fake News”. We have started with
description of infographics about fake news. The highlight of the session was illustrative
video about the essence of faking the news. Our U.S. guest Prof. Linda Grey was
our expert on how fake news are spread in the USA.
Several
illustrative videos raised the awareness of the group about the danger of fake
news and how to separate facts from fiction.
The
topic was complicated, but all the attendees made it to the end of the session.
We hope they will use critical thinking in the media.
At
the end of the session the group had a Q&A activity with our American
guest.

On October, 27 – Tea with Linda Gray.
Prof.
Gray, the long-time friend of WOA Dnipro invited the Club’s Committee for a cup
of tea after the session. It was a very enjoyable conversation.

Window on America Dnipro
observes the Global Media Literacy Week and invited the high school students to
talk about Media literacy skills that are very important in the 21st century. Dnipro’s
school No.28 is a longtime partner of WOA Dnipro, the students of this school
are fluent in English.

The Haunted Mansion is
