Amazing film about American Technology

A big group of Dnipro "Window on America" patrons watched a film about the American Technology.
The viewers raptly watched the plot and learned about new opportunities in curing rare diseases. Three-dimensional printing devices print human organs and help to fight the pests – California beetles. Many of those present have even never heard about “the virtual reality”, while it has been used by Armed forces of Ukraine. In the times of energy crisis it is possible to produce the fuel even of trash. The most stunning thing was to see NASA creating the aircraft of the future.

Salvador

Tonight we, the Wednesday Movie Club members (Dnipro Window on America center, Ukraine) offered the big screening of the film Salvador (1986).Salvador is a 1986 American war drama film co-written and directed by Oliver Stone. Stone wrote the screenplay with Richard Boyle. It stars James Woods as Richard Boyle, alongside Jim Belushi, Michael Murphy and Elpidia Carrillo, with John Savage, and Cynthia Gibb in supporting roles.
The film tells the story of an American ex-IPN journalist and one-time author of the 1972 book The Flower of the Dragon: The Breakdown of the U.S. Army in Vietnam, covering the Salvadoran Civil War who becomes entangled with both leftist guerrillas and the right wing military while trying to rescue his native girlfriend and her children. The film is highly sympathetic towards the left wing revolutionaries and strongly critical of the U.S.-supported military, focusing on the murder of four American churchwomen, including Jean Donovan, and the assassination of Archbishop Óscar Romero by a death squad. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Actor in a Leading Role (Woods) and Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen (Stone and Boyle).

WOA’s patrons enjoyed the film and the discussion that followed.

Disadvantages of one’s profession

Activate English Group 5.8.: Disadvantages of one’s profession.
The "Activate English” group session took place today. The students actively communicated in pairs. During the previous lesson we talked about the advantages of their work, today it was necessary to name the disadvantages of one’s profession. The group mentioned such disadvantages as "long working hours", "nervous activity", "noisy children", "visit of the tax authorities", "equipment that often breaks down”, "low wages" and others. We reviewed grammatical rules for comparative degree of adjectives and practices several exercises. The group reviews new vocabulary for the topic "Transport". The students received homework to prepare a story about the transport which they use on a daily basis, during the holidays, fares for city transport, etc.
The professional EFL lecturer T. Gavryliuk combined the lexical exercises with important cross-cultural information that will help the English learners to understand their foreign counterparts better and to avoid awkward situations in communication.

Book Display: Improve English together

The information-resource center "Window on America" Dnipro this month presented to its patrons the book display "Improve English together".
The display introduces the collection of textbooks, books, audio books, CDs and DVDs available to all those wishing to improve their language skills.
The displayed books were donated to the DOUNB library by the US Embassy in Ukraine and the US charity foundation "Sabre-Light" within the period of 25 years since diplomatic relations between Ukraine and the USA were established.

Discover education system in the USA

Education in the USA display.
The Dnipro Window on America center presented a book & brochure display for the ambitious patrons who consider study abroad.
The recent brochures sent by USA universities interested in Ukrainian students provide a lot of useful information about the study in the USA.
The Universities offer graduate and post graduate courses. Their colorful brochures give details of the courses as well as beautiful images of the campuses in different states.
All WOA’s patrons interested in studying in the USA receive advice about the procedures and the “Education USA” center in Dnipro.

Speed English “Media Literacy”

The WOA patrons (in Dnipro Window on America center, Ukraine) were offered the Speed English session with the topic ”Media Literacy”. The learners of English exchanged their opinions about the role of media in the life of Ukrainians, the independence of media, the interpretation of facts in the media, etc. The group enjoyed the conversation even though the topic was quite complicated.

Water Day and April Pranks

This afternoon the Gabfest Club session (in Dnipro Window on America center, Ukraine) started with the introductions of the new-comers who shared with the group their reasons to improve the English skills. The official topics of the session were UN Water Day and April’s Fools Day. The group was reminded that March, 22 was the UN Water Day. The Club members watched the YouTube videos about the global problem of fresh water scarceness and wasting. They discussed the year 2017 theme “Why Waste Water?”. The group talked about water as a precious resource and ways of its saving. The animated cartoon about water saving made in Singapore appealed to the group as it introduced new vocabulary and showed good ways to save water.

In the second part of the session the group was offered videos about the April fool’s Day. We watched a video that explained the history of the holiday in Europe. The group was offered a slide show explaining the most popular Fool’s Day pranks in the USA and tried to translate into English the description of the Ukrainian pranks. Some US pranks were similar to the Ukrainian ones, some were hard to understand. The group had a good laugh when trying to understand how US prankster behave on April Fool’s Day.
