The session of the revived Grasshoppers Club took place at WOA Dnipro this afternoon.
It was prepared and moderated by WOA’s volunteer Anna Motorina, a fluent speaker of English and a high school student (Dnipro’s School #9), ready to share her knowledge.
The session consisted of several types of language activities, new vocabulary introduction, cognitive videos watching, games and active discussion.
The topic of today session was “Grammar: Present Simple Tense”.
The most anticipated activity was the word game “Apples to Apples”. The fan of the game Svitlana presented the rules to the rest of the group. And she was a Judge. The boys and girls introduced her to their hilarious game of crazy comparisons. School students enjoyed the “Apples to Apples” game.

Master students of the Electrical Engineering faculty visited "Window on America" center. They got acquainted with various services this center offers to everyone interested in the language and culture of the USA.
One of the most useful was the opportunity to access one of the biggest electronic libraries e-Library USA. This electronic resource can be very helpful in their research and preparation for Master thesis.
You can both work and have fun at the "Window on America" center.
"Apples to Apples" is one of the various board games the Center visitors can enjoy. This simple game is a funny chance to use your imagination and learn new words and their combinations.
Learning can be fun with Window on America and the Department of Foreign Languages.

Today’s session of the American Teen Club (at Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine) started with the introductions of the “УкраїнаSpeaking” project. The aim is to draw attention of the young generation to the importance of the foreign language skills.
The official topic of the Teen Club was Chinese New Year. The group was offered to describe several images with the artifacts of Chinese culture: coins, utensils, etc.
The WOA staff member T. Gavryliuk presented the Chinese Zodiac to the group in English. It is a repeating cycle of 12 years, with each year being represented by an animal and its reputed attributes. Traditionally these zodiac animals were used to date the years. In order, the 12 animals are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. The teenagers explored the provided table and shared the information about their birth year according to the Chinese Zodiac.
Besides, the group was told about the life of Chinese community in the USA. We have watched several videos about the history of celebration of the Chinese New Year in the USA, about the culture of the America-born Chinese teenagers.
The most anticipated activity was the word game “Apples to Apples”. The fans of the game Eric and Yegor presented the rules to the rest of the group. Marina as the only lady at the session was offered the role of the Judge. The boys introduced our UK guest Mr. Paul to this hilarious game of crazy comparisons. Both senior students and the medium school students enjoyed the “Apples to Apples” game.

Today’s session of the Teen Club was attended by few brave boys – Eric and Yegor. The rest of the teenagers stayed at home due to the flu epidemic. At the beginning of the session the WOA staff encouraged the boys to share their tastes in winter songs. Eric suggested that we listen and translate the iconic winter time songs: “Happy New Year” by ABBA and “Santa Clause is coming to town” by different popular performers – from classical to rock.
A cup of tea with sweet snacks activated the brain cells and prepared the boys to a brain-storm - the teenagers were introduced to the WOA’s table games. The “Apples to Apples” game was explained in detail and the boys really enjoyed playing it from the first round.
At a later stage the teenagers were joined by our UK volunteer Mr. Paul. The group enjoyed playing the “Monopoly” game. The boys had a chance to practice their introduction phrases.

The session of the American Teen Club took place in Window on America Dnipropetrovsk (Ukraine).
The Head of WOA Svitlana Usenko prepared several educational activities for the group. The group watched videos, learned Christmas vocabulary and Christmas song. The original subtitles helped the group a lot and introduced many new words and expressions.
Second part of meeting was dedicated to the Monopoly (board game).
Monopoly is a board game that originated in the United States in 1903 as a way to demonstrate the evils of land ownership. The current version was published by Parker Brothers in 1935. Subtitled "The Fast-Dealing Property Trading Game", the game is named after the economic concept of monopoly – the domination of a market by a single entity. It is now produced by the United States game and toy company Hasbro. Players move around the gameboard buying or trading properties, developing their properties with houses and hotels, and collecting rent from their opponents, with the goal being to drive them all into bankruptcy leaving one monopolist in control of the entire economy.
WOA’s young patrons enjoyed the game.

This Saturday the Gabfest Club (Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine) members took part in the global event – the International Games Day.
The first part of the session was dedicated to the introduction of the event and the conversation about board games and their role in the lives of modern people. The phenomenon of “game-based learning” was introduced to the group and illustrated with several You Tube videos. The club members shared their experiences of having gamification elements in training and their attitude to the games that actually teach you something. New vocabulary to the topic was also introduced.
The second part of the Games Day session was the introduction of the WOA’s board games collection. Our American volunteer Mr. Jason took an active part in the games introduction. We started with the elementary school games that may be useful to American English learners as they teach spelling (“Boggle”) and progressed to the most challenging ones (the crossword game “Scrabble” and its varieties). The popular games that are just fun were also introduced (“The Jungle Speed” and “Monopoly”). The most helpful games for the Gabfest Club members are: “Apples to Apples” that enriches vocabulary and “Taboo” that improves descriptive and speaking skills.
The highlight of the session was introduction of the board games set “Activate”. The group was offered a trial set of educational games for American English learners. The participant formed pairs and actively had conversations according to the games’ titles.
The session was a funny and educational event that introduced new trends in language learning.
The Gabfest Club members made a video about their Games Day at Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine for the global International Games Day site.

The "Window on America" center (Dnipropetrovsk / Ukraine) resumed sessions of the "American TEEN club" where students can improve their English skills, learn more about the United States and have a nice time with friends. The session was prepared and moderated by the FLEX (Future Leaders Exchange) program graduate Anna Akastyelova who is a long time WOA’s friend and volunteer.
During the session the group was involved into educational activities: reading, translation, answering questions of the moderator.
The second part of the club’s session was devoted to educational and linguistic desktop card game "Apples to Apples". Players had to learn how to make English phrases using "red apple" cards (which generally feature a noun) and matching "green apple" cards (which contain an adjective) Every player had to choose a strategy to win. The game was both funny and educational for English learners.

This day the American Teen Club meeting was dedicated to the topic "St. Valentine’s Day".
"Window on America" center hosted American Teen Club members,
Dnipropetrovsk teenagers, who are willing to improve their English
language, get to know about the United States and have a good time! The
meeting was lead by the FLEX alumni Darya Gerasymova'13 and Hanna
Akastelova’13.
The youth from the American Teen Club learned how to
express one’s feelings in English. They shared their wonderful mood,
treated each other with chocolate candies and cakes.
The wonderful atmosphere of the Valentine’s Day was complemented with watching the favorite series “Friends”.
The young people especially enjoyed the vocabulary battle “Apples to Apples”. This table game is very useful as it helps the students of
English to activate their vocabulary and use it in conversations.
Everyone was engaged and practiced their speaking skills!
