FULBRIGHT Award Winner at WOA Dnipropetrovsk

Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk welcomes Denys Maksymov – the Fulbright Foreign Student Exchange Program participant. Denys has a Bachelor Degree in IT studies from the Dnipropetrovsk National Oles Honchar University and will take a Master degree course at one of the US Universities.
The Fulbright Foreign Student Program enables graduate students, young professionals, and artists from abroad to research and study in the United States for one year or longer at U.S. universities or other appropriate institutions. To participate in the Fulbright Foreign Student Program, the applicant must have completed undergraduate education and hold a degree equivalent to a bachelor's degree.

From the mines to art heights

Within the framework of the “From the mines to art heights” project the students of Mining University visited the "Window on America" Center (Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine).
The group was accompanied by the English language lecturer Mr. Brian Chung, the Fulbright academic exchange lecturer from New York.
The objective of the visit was to introduce the students to the American comedy film written, produced and directed by John Hughes  with actors Matthew Broderick, Alan Ruck, Mia Sara starring.
The film was presented to students who wish to improve their language skills.
Plot: A high school wise guy is determined to have a day off from school, despite of what the principal thinks of that.

The Fulbright academic exchange lecturer Brian Chung from the National Mining University and students visited the Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine.
The film The Breakfast club was presented to all who wish to improve their language skills.

American universities

To the International Education Week a book display «If you want to study in the USA» was organized as an illustration to the educational opportunities in the USA.
The world known programs for academic and professional exchange were introduced on display - the Fulbright Program, IREX, the Humphrey fellowship.

Q and A meeting

Today’s session of the GABFEST speaking club (at Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine) had a visitor from the US State of Rhode Island. 
The Fulbright academic exchange lecturer, Business Professor Heidi Allen who will be lecturing in English in the National Mining University within 6 weeks, told about her lifestyle, travels and food preferences, shared her first impressions of the city and answered on numerous questions from club members.
Mrs. Heidi was impressed to see well-know the Dnieper river embankment, where she went jogging as well as in the large Taras Shevchenko Park (which is on the right bank of the river) and on Monastyrsky Island and was amazed to see high level of Ukrainian interest in outdoor sport activities the same as in the US. Club members recommended to visit places in Dnipropetrovsk where can be enriched her knowledge about the city and suggested “what is worth trying” in Ukrainian cuisine and drinks. And the conversation drifted into the discussion on kitchen and gardens across America and particularly the state where Mrs. Heidi lives and comparison between Ukrainian and American vegetables and fruits which people grow their own. There was mentioned a big difference regarding Ukrainians. Having summerhouse is not only to have a break from polluted city but also very hard work and preparation for wintertime in order to grown their own plants, can vegetables, store them in a cool, dry, dark drawer or bin, make winter jams.
Then, discussion was about traveling. And guest was highly advised to visit Western Ukraine in order to experience varieties of traditions, events with folk costumes, tendency to use Ukrainian language.
Professor told about traveling experience around the World. The journey began when Mrs. Heidi`s family moved from Germany, it was at the very early age. Being adult, Mrs. Heidi had more trips and even found a book “how to travel for 10 usd” . And as a joke mentioned that now there is a book with the same title but “… for 100 usd”.
In the past, Mrs. Heidi had a chance to live and work in South Korea where so many high-tech devices weren’t as now, and country wasn’t as rich. Living in a small city, she was only American and children followed her on a street repeating all the time “American, American…”
Mrs. Heidi also has her own blog where she uploads photos of Ukraine for her American students so as to give them more information about the country and share her thoughts about culture and new experience to encourage them to visit it.
Today`s session was the Q&A. The Gabfest visitors had a chance to practice English communication skills, had a “small talk” with a native speaker and have a lot of interest in future meetings with Mrs. Heidi.
The session full of communication was enjoyed by all participants. We hope for further friendship and cooperation with Mrs. Heidi Allen.

The Fulbright academic exchange lecturer

Today’s session of the  English Speaking Club in Dnipropetrovsk WOA was unexpectedly successful.

The Fulbright academic exchange lecturer from the National Mining University visited the WOA Centre.

Mrs. Virginia KLEIST is an associate professor of the West Virginia University and will be lecturing information technology and cybernetics in English for one month. She was refereed to our centre by another Fulbright exchange professor from USA – Youngtae Shin, a good friend of our club.

It was a nice occasion when we had   both Peace Corp. volunteers and the Fulbright program professor present at our session.

Mrs. Kleist introduced herself to the club members and listened to the introductions of all the club members.

She made an improvised presentation of 2 states - Pennsylvania where she lives and West Virginia where she works. Professor mentioned the analogies between these states and Ukrainian provinces where coal mining is the main industry, she told about the similar problems faced by the miners in the USA.

The club members asked a lot of questions about the social life in Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

At some stage the discussion drifted to the travel impressions of Mrs. Kleist. She told us about the logistics of her trip and asked a lot of questions about the professor’s impressions after Istanbul and Dnipropetrovsk

In return the Professor asked the club members about the places of interest she should visit in Dnipropetrovsk and in Ukraine. The club members recommended a few nice places in Dnipropetrovsk and other places.

As a tourist attraction of the city we offered a visit to the local historical museum where a museum festival was taking place. The clubs’ friend Valentina, the museum’s guide, offered to Prof. Kleist a guided tour in English.

The session full of communication was enjoyed by all participants. We hope for further friendship and cooperation with Mrs. Virginia.
