The Window on America Dnipro center (Ukraine) offer the library patrons an “Express English: Activate English 8.0.” activity that will help them to activate their passive knowledge of the foreign language and to overcome the fear of speaking in English.
The two hour- lecture is offered for the participants to improve their conversational skills in pairs. All the participants found the session educational and helpful.

Graduation in Summer Heat

The Basic English group - 6 of the Express-English course at DOUNB Library completed their curriculum.
The learners (in Window on America center in Dnipro, Ukraine) were offered several units of educational information: English alphabet and sounds pronunciation; reading rules and reading practices; basic vocabulary; basic speaking practices (greetings in English, introducing oneself, talking about one’s family).
Particular attention was given to the phonetical differences in American English and British English.
At the final session the group was able to listen, read, comprehend rather big texts, and they could make speeches in English.
The course became a good impulse for the participants – they will continue to study English Grammar on-line and some of them will join higher level groups offered at DOUNB Library’s Express-English.
The Basic English group impressed the instructor Tamara Gavryliyuk with their enthusiasm. The students showed good progress.

Basic English 6.0. in JulyOn July, 6 - Students of all generations attend the Basic English lessons in Dnipro Window on America center at the DOUNB Library. The Group was founded as a training site for people who never studied English or for those who need to return to the basics of the language.
This afternoon the Basic English group 6.7. has practiced reading  and they are now able to talk about “About myself” in English.

The professional EFL lecturer T. Gavryliuk combines the lexical exercises with important cross-cultural information that will help the English learners to understand their foreign counterparts better and to avoid awkward situations in communication.

The DOUNB Library had a huge influx of new-comers that got interested in the possibility to study English in the new format.
The Window on America Dnipropetrovsk center offers the library patrons an “Express English” activity that will help them to activate their passive knowledge of the foreign language and to overcome the fear of speaking in English. Ten two hour- lectures are offered for the participants to improve their conversational skills in pairs.
The professional EFL lecturer T. Gavryliuk combines the lexical exercises with important cross-cultural information that will help the English learners to understand their foreign counterparts better and to avoid awkward situations in communication.

The first session of the Activate English Group in 2017 was attended by the WOA’s US volunteer Mr. Kelly and his English-speaking friend – a foreign student in Dnipro. The foreign guests demonstrated to the group how to make introductions and greetings. A Q@A exercise allowed breaking the ice between the Ukrainians and the foreign guests.
The eager learners who could not join the group were placed on the “waiting list” and invited to join other WOA’s activities -Wednesday Movie Club and the “Gabfest” Speaking Club on Saturdays.

Basic English Group in November

November, 3 – Students of all generations attend the Basic English lessons in Dnipro Window on America center at the DOUNB Library. The Group was founded as a training site for people who never studied English or for those who need to return to the basics of the language.
This afternoon the group learned the rules of vowels reading according to the syllable type. We practiced reading clusters of words to obtain the proper articulation speed.
The practice of short/long vowel and voiced/unvoiced consonant in pairs was also very useful for the students. The sight words charts were introduced to accelerate the reading skills. The students were encouraged to learn the meaning of the words at home.
All the participants found the session educational and helpful.

November, 10 – Basic English Group 4.5 started to read.
In spite of the inclement weather conditions a big group of new comers arrived for the fifth lesson of the Basic English group at DOUNB Library and Dnipro Window on America center.  With big enthusiasm the group started to read easy English words.
The year 2016 in Ukraine is the year of the English Language.
The Basic English Group at DOUNB library is an integral part of the EXPRESS-ENGLISH course offered to the Window on America Dnipro patrons in year 2016.
All the participants found the session educational and helpful. So we’ll meet again very soon.

 On November, 17th – «International Games Day at DniproWOA» - We play and learn.Information and Resource Center "Window on America" joined the observance of the International Games Days (#IGD16).  Thousands of libraries worldwide under the initiative of American Library Association celebrate this date (November 19) for 9th time.

The day turned into a week when the libraries of the world present modern library services to their communities and play funny and educational games.
On this day, the Basic English group was introduced to the WOA’s game collection.
The group participants played board games with linguistic collection "Activate / Activate» (Use a Word, What You Might Find, Name Your' Favorite) guided by the center’s staff.
 The more knowledgeable students were initiated into, the game "Apples to Apples". It requires matching of nouns and adjectives.
For gadget fans the game "Futaba was introduced.. It involves four people at a time; they had to match a name and a picture.
All the proposed games have enriched the vocabulary of our students and improved their spirits. Learning English may be fun even to adults. Look at the faces of the participants!
At the end of the day the gaming session was offered to the middle students. They used WOA’s iPads to play word game “Futaba’.

Past Indefinite Tense

Activate English Group 2.3. – “Past Indefinite Tense”.
The year 2016 in Ukraine is the year of the English Language.
The Activate English Group at DOUNB library is an integral part of the EXPRESS-ENGLISH course offered to the Window on America Dnipropetrovsk readers in year 2016.
The Activate English Group 2.3. had a session today. They had a stroke of luck – two American guests visited their lesson: Mr. Stephen and Mr. Jason. The group had a chance to introduce themselves to the foreigners and tell them about their homes.
The group practiced Past Indefinite Tense and asking permission formally/informally. The home task was to prepare the story about the family.
All the participants found the session educational and helpful.

Express-English Basic Group. Meeting 2.2.

This afternoon the second session of the Basic English Group took place at the DOUNB Library in Window on America Dnipropetrovsk (Ukraine).
The Group was founded as a training site for people who never studied English or for those who need to return to the basics of the language.
The ABC introduction was helpful for all. Now they can sing along the ABC song. The  learners of English  tried very hard to understand the reading rules for English vowels and diphthongs.

The Activate English Group at DOUNB library is an integral part of the EXPRESS-ENGLISH course offered to the Window on America Dnipropetrovsk readers in year 2016.
The Activate English Group was created for people who have been studying English for several years, but are too shy to speak. The objective of the course is to activate the passive knowledge and enable the students of English to express themselves in English no matter how small might be their vocabulary.
Activate English Group – 2: Lesson 2 – The Group’s Instructor T. Gavryliyuk was pleasantly surprised to hear the participants drill the new vocabulary and rehearse their home task dialogues before the start of the Lesson. In pair conversations the students of English practiced the phrases from the topic “My Home”.

This afternoon the first session of the “Basic English Group – 2” took place at the DOUNB Library in Window on America Dnipropetrovsk (Ukraine).
The Group was founded as a training site for people who never studied English or for those who need to return to the basics of the language.
All the participants found the session educational and helpful.

Activate English Group 1.10. – The First Graduation

The most durable participants of "Activate English Group - 1" gained the certificates.
Graduation of "Activate English" group took place today at the WOA Dnipropetrovsk. The group had a 20 hour language course within the framework of the project “Express-English at the DOUNB Library”. The instruction was provided by the library staff member Tamara Gavryliuk who has the University degree equivalent of the MA in ESL.
The course was based on the materials from the textbook published by McMillan Language House and focused on the conversational practice for intermediate and advanced level learners of English.
During 10 educational sessions the students practiced popular conversational topics, studied new vocabulary and grammatical structures, learned about the basic etiquette of the English-speaking countries, mastered the skills of “small talk”. At the final session the most diligent students received certificates of attendance.

Activate English Group - Shopping

The "Window on America" Information and Resource Center continues the sessions of the educational project “Express- English”. 
The "Activate English" group had 1.5 hour of enjoyable conversation about "Shopping." The group talked about fashion and personal preferences in choosing clothes. Only half of the group turned up due to the shifts in the schedule.

The new structures that were introduced in the second part of the session was “Future Tense”. The new vocabulary was introduced for the topics “Offers and Invitations” and “Shopping”.
