The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine offered screening of the film The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2008) with Asa Butterfield, David Thewlis, Rupert Friend starring.
Plot: Set during World War II, a story seen through the innocent eyes of Bruno, the eight-year-old son of the commandant at a concentration camp, whose forbidden friendship with a Jewish boy on the other side of the camp fence has startling and unexpected consequences.

Families Matter for the Achievement of Development Goals
Today’s session of the Gabfest Club (at Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine) was dedicated to the joint observance of the important May dates: Mother’s Day (May, 11) and the International Day of Families (15 May). We have explored the UN's International Day of Families web pages.. The theme for 2014 is "Families Matter for the Achievement of Development Goals". We decided to focus on the role of families in development and touched upon the following issue in our discussion:
- promoting a Marriage-Friendly Culture.
The club members exchanged their views on “pro”s and “contra”s of marriage in the modern Ukrainian society.
Mother's Day in the United States is annually held on the second Sunday of May. It celebrates motherhood and appreciation of mothers and mother figures. Watching a beautiful slide show with verses about mothers created the relevant atmosphere. Our foreign club member Prince told us about the tradition in his country, the Ukrainian club members explained the situation in Ukraine.
To practice interpreting skills the club members illustrated the cult of Mother in Ukrainian culture with You Tube videos of popular songs about mother. The biggest challenge (as always in the cross-cultural communication) was to explain the symbolism used in the songs’ lyrics.
The session was quiet but quite educational.

The Stepford Wives
Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine offered screening of the comedy-drama film The Stepford Wives (2004) with Nicole Kidman, Bette Midler, Matthew Broderick starring.
To you Urban Dictionary:
1.) Used to describe a servile, compliant, submissive, spineless wife
who happily does her husband's bidding and serves his every whim
dutifully.
2.) Can also be used to describe a wife who is cookie-cutter & bland in appearance and behavior. Subscribes to a popular look and dares not deviate from that look.
This term is borrowed from the fictional suburb of Stepford, Connecticut in Ira Levin's 1972 novel, The Stepford Wives, later made into movies (in 1975 and 2004). In the story, men of this seemingly ideal town have replaced their wives with attractive robotic dolls devoid of emotion or thought.

U.S. Presidents - Facts, Pictures, Videos
On May, 5, 2014 the was visited by a group of the 8th grade students from the local school No. 23 (with focus on English study).
The WOA’s Head S. Usenko briefed the group on the history of the center and presented its resources.
The students were impressed by the American Scholastic atlases and dictionaries, devoted to the American presidents.
The students demonstrated their knowledge about the American presidents.
The auditing skills of the students were challenged by the YouTube video about the American presidents.
The students and the teachers enjoyed the visit and found it very educational.

Arbor Day
We watched and discussed the YouTube video about Urban Forests in the US cities. From this movie we learned about a “Million Trees for a City” campaign and the important role of trees in urban areas. Our club member Prince was told about Ukrainian traditions of tree cultivation in big cities and in return told us about the traditions of his own country.
The Club members were offered an activity that was associated with tree names. They were given a list of Ukrainian folk songs in which popular trees were mentioned. The task was to listen to a song’s lyrics and translate it into English. The task was quite challenging: besides translation of the lyrics to explain the symbolism of the folk poetry. But most of the club members succeeded in the task.
In the last part of the session the new book displays were presented to the group. “The New Arrivals” display attracted the attentions of the most active club members. “The Donations and Donators” display reminded the group about our American and Ukrainian friends who gave their books to the library.
The session was very educational to all participants.
